I recently wrote on article on the NZ motorcycle licencing system, to which somebody replied saying it would be interesting to know what the motorcycle accident statistics were like over here. I have managed to find that information, which is included in the table below:

Thanks Dude
About to go out for a ride. When I get back in an hour or so I'll see what I can come up with in Excel or Visio and post it back on here.

Those numbers don't really mean anything unless you can get the total number of road users in each class. Can you get those too? It'd be good if the numbers were also broken down by, say, light injuries vs. KSI (killed or seriously injured). ____________________ My Old CBR400RR | Bike Oil FAQ | Petrol FAQ |

Thanks Rory,
I'm working on it was you speak:
Here's something for starters. Also. To answer one of your questions there are about 60,000 registered motorcycles in NZ.

Cool, that's pretty in-depth. If you can get the total number of road users, you can figure out things like % of total accidents vs % of road users, which for bikes would be higher than cars, for example. If you can get stats for how many miles / kms were travelled in total each year, you can also see how accident rates have changed as the total distance travelled has changed.
This can turn an overall rise in accident rates into a decrease per total number of road users or per mile / km travelled, which is a bit more useful. ____________________ My Old CBR400RR | Bike Oil FAQ | Petrol FAQ |

Hi
Found the 1998 figures. Note that UK motorcycle death rates have gone up drastically since this time.
Drivers = 1119 (plus 7 for 3 wheelers and 2 for taxis)
Passengers = 552 (plus 1 for 3 wheelers and 3 for taxis)
Motorcycle Rider = 456
Motorcycle Pillions = 32
Pedestrians = 906
Pedal cyclists = 158
There are a load of other groups as well (eg, 52 HGV drivers and 8 HGV passengers, 1 bus driver and 17 bus passengers).
Total road deaths that year was 3421.
All the best
