Hi,

I have run into a problem removing the Spyball imobiliser from my BMW R1100S.

According to the scant information I have managed to find, the Spyball has two immobiliser circuits. By completely removing the unit and tracing the 16 all-black wires, I managed to find the two circuits on the bike that had been 'broken into'.

One was black-with-yellow-stripe and goes to the starter relay. Removing the immobiliser and re-joining these original two wires got the starter spinning. All good so far.

The other wire that has been broken is green-with-white-stripe. According to the circuit diagram, this seems to connect to various components, including: fuel pump/fuel-level sensor, fuel injectors, oxygen sensor, fuel-pump relay. I have re-joined this wire.

The bike cranks, but I get no spark at the plug. I've checked a few points on the wiring harness, and have constant 12V where I'd expect it, earth where I'd expect it, and ignition-switched 12V where I'd expect it. All fuses are intact.

Couple of suspicious things:

Next to the now-removed Spyball, I found a little box of fairly sophisticated electronics. On the case, is the word 'SafTVal'. Googling this implies it may be a GPS tracker or even a GPS immobilisation unit. It has three wires: red - constant 12V, black - earth, and black-with-white-stripe, which is floating free and looks like it may have broken off from somewhere. Do you think this could be shutting down the bike? If so, where do I connect the broken-off wire (can't spot anywhere it might have come from)?

Another suspicious thing is that I have heard rumours that these bikes will not fire if there is no fuel in the tank. Does anyone know if this is true?

Any help would be desperately appreciated. I currently have a very sorry looking pile of metal and loose wires sitting in my shed, and, even if I can find the cash to take it to a dealer, I doubt they'd be happy to take it like this.

Crying or Very sad

- Patrick

I cant think of anything that's stopping your bike running, because if you've reconnected all the wires that the immobiliser was jacked into then that should be all that needs to be done...
the 3rd wire on the GPS tracker should go to an ignition live if im not mistaken.
all you can to is double and triple check and make sure you haven't missed anything
as for the empty tank suspicion, only one way to find out? stick some juice in it

Someone else had a similar problem recently (BMW + Spyball), but I don't know the outcome. I tried searching the forums, but can't find the thread now Sad

It is possible that the loose wire from the GPS module went to the coil of a relay somewhere, so you may have to hunt around for it.

(you have checked the kill switch, haven't you?)

From your description, it sounds like the way around the immobiliser (for a theif) would just be to cut through the bundle of black wires leading to the immobiliser. This is poor security.

A decent design would run some of the circuits through the immobiliser, removing the original wiring - so if you remove the immobilser, the bike will not run.

If your system was built on that theory, then you need to find out which circuits run though the immobiliser and rebuild them. Wiring diagram, pencil, multimeter and lots of time required.
