Are there any US motorcycle accessories websites which i could order from without getting hit with import fees?
Am i right in thinking if the value is below £15 there would be no customs charges?

Sometimes, if they label it as a gift you can get away with it.

Depending what you need and how big/heavy it is I could perhaps bring it back from the US in 3 weeks from now? And bring it up to Leicestershire 4 weeks from now as I have a wedding to go to then so driving up!

You will be very lucky to find a retailer to state gift. As they would be the one's to get hit if they did....

I think he means VAT and the associated extortion money.

I bought 2 t-shirts from the US and had to pay VAT and handling fee, which in comparison to the cost of the product, was actually quite a lot!

All in the labeling

Most companies won't do it though.

Its also depends on who the carrier is, I've found certain carriers are prone to imposing the duties & others don't. The worst offenders seem to be USPS/Royal mail. Where as FedEx/DHL etc haven't added the duties. So maybe asking the vendor to ship it non USPS/RM might help

I brought a Contour from ebay, turns out the item, was send from the US to an office in the uk then onto me. whole process took 14days over the christmas period.

The ebay listing said they was based in london, and that is where the senders return address was, but the invoice was in dollors, with an address in Boston.

Perhaps you can find a company that does such a simaliar thing

US company's wont ship the items outside of the US as a gift or with a under declared value as its a federal offence to do so, its just too much of a risk. Though if you are lucky some private ebay sellers and small time business might do so if you ask.

My son was just done by USPS/Royal mail.
Spent $25.59 on a US site (to just get over their $25 "free shipping" limit).
HMRC/USPS/Royal mail determined this was over the £15 limit for no VAT, so charged £3.32 VAT plus a £8 Handling Fee for collecting it!

This explains why everything I've bought from HK / China has arrived labeled as a gift.

FedEx tend to stiff you for a bill after you have received the goods. I ordered a watch from Japan, received it and then a week later got a bill from FedEx for another £30 odd for import fees.

I buy old razors from the US. Many dollars, sometimes I get hit for a couple of quid, sometimes no.
For $15 you'll be fine. Should be safely under the customs threshold (£18? IIRC).
VAT on that will hardly kill the budget.
Clarify if you are paying import duty at POS.

Been over many times. There's no statutory basis for them withholding the parcel until this super-tithe has been paid. Technically it's a criminal offence for them to hold it once you've paid the duty/VAT.

But they've got your parcel, and who's going to stop them?

This happened to me last year - I ignored it, and the 'final reminder' and heard nothing more.

Try changing your delivery name to 'Warranty Returns Department' - this seems to work for me.

Seems like the luck of the draw to me. I've had a single t-shirt which was about £20 hit by charges which made it a very expensive t-shirt; OTOH, I've had over £200 of RC car parts come straight through free.

I bought a watch from Texas and it was ~ US $200 from a reasonable ebayer seller with a few 1000 feedback.

They'd marked it up as $25 on the green douanes sticker, so it can happen.

I've also had a BMX couriered over and that didn't get hit with tax either.

Wow, all this over a few dollars Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Slightly off topic but I took ill on the plane leaving Washington and was whisked off to the local hospital where I was poked, prodded and scanned.
Kept in overnight but the results of the scans turned out to be negative so I was released on condition that I did not travel home for a week. The pain subsided over the next couple of days and I enjoyed the extended holiday before coming back to a bill for $10,000 Shocked Shocked .......... covered by insurance. Laughing Laughing Cool

Don't ever think of going to America without it.

It's not the taxes that people are actually bothered about, it's about the disproportionate extortion levered by the delivery companies.
