Anyone gone from a crm250 to a crf450, and if so, what's it like? If not, what're some opinions on the 450?

I'll probably be running the crm for the foreseeable future, not least cos I've just sunk £65 into it for a new chain slider after the old one collapsed, got caught up in the front sprocket, seizing the chain up, locking the back wheel into a skid and nearly chucking me up the road of a local housing estate. Laughing

Fitted new DID chain and talon sprox as well. Not to mention new rear knobbly.

I do like the crm a lot - especially the suspension. And probably don't use more than half the power 90% of the time - local green lane pottering. But the more I use it, the more of it I use. After a year, I'm a *lot* better than I was. Still shit, mind - but always improving, if sporadically and incrementally.

Anyway, sort of half fancy a 450 after seeing a kid chuck one up the walls of a local quarry last week. Holy crap, fearless nutter was razzing it around like a reet maniac. Some incredible riding. Bike and rider were a joy to watch.

Almost certainly be wasted on me, a bike like that. But yeah. Tempting all the same. Sounded great too.

EDIT - see below. Some tard's nicked me bike.

I went from TTR 250 to CRM 250, personally, I would never go back to a four stroke. Even 450's. I've had a spin on a wr450F and it just felt too abrupt in power for me. It would certainly make wheelies and hill climbs easier with less gear changes, but after a razz about today on my bike, I was climbing hills that I have never made it up before on my TTR.

Sounds like the same thing happened to me as happened to you. I've just stuck some new Talon Sprockets and a DID chain on as well as a Michelin comp 4 on the back. I went for 13/45 after 14/42 and now it has so much more useable power. The CRM is basically un-stallable, the revs can drop right off before the engine dies, the racier four strokes don't allow for that.

I do love the 450's but I always feel like modern enduro bikes are really small, I just feel massive on them. 90's bikes seem to be proportioned the best for me. I don't know if that even cropped into your head, but try to blag a go on one before making a decision.

Boo Thumbs Down.

I've ridden CRM250s a few times and ridden a few 450s (owned a CRF450 for a bit too).

I'm still all for the competition 2 strokes personally - 300 EXC/EC will do what the 450 will do, better in some cases - for many 'extreme' enduros (does depend on the event/rider) the pros will choose the 2 stroke over the 4.

The 450s do have more top end and tend to be geared a little higher - best, they've got engine braking (and lots of it). But they're heavier, probably aren't quite as good low down as the smoker and don't have quite as flat delivery as the 300 either.

Of course, the rider in question could probably do that on any bike - going up stuff with a run up generally isn't an issue with the size of the engine. Engine does make more of a difference for an extended climb, or with no run up.

At four marks once I let a KX450 rider have a go on my KTM144XC (and I had a play on his bike).
When we swapped back he said the KX was going on ebay that evening to get something like mine - though I do find the 144 slightly lacking, personally.

I do want it back - it was perfect for the stuff I did. Well okay, perhaps in some ways a bit better than I deserved RE my abilities. But I was growing into it, using more each time I went out. And have used it on a weekly basis since buying it last easter.

It's a red honda crm250 on an F plate, with 18k km on the clock. Expected to be stashed in a wood somewhere in the York, Hull, Beverly, Selby, Goole, Market Weighton, Pocklington areas. Let's face it, it's gone for good.

I've had bikes stolen three times in total I think, maybe four. Never not had one back yet.

Have a decent look around for it, I found my CBR less than half a mile from home, they'd blown the main fuse. They also cut themselves on it, the blood secured a conviction.

That sucks so much. Crying or Very sad

I hate to say it, but I doubt many off-roaders ever find their way home once nicked.

I try to ride around the block a couple of times before coming home just in case someone is following me. With 4 off-roaders in the garage, best not risk some scoundrel with a van finding them. Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear your bike has gone!
It might well turn up again though, as other's have said off roaders are normally taken by chavs for a rag around the fields, and then either dumped somewhere or torched.

I don't want to say where, but I once found an obviously stolen KTM125SX of at least 2004> stashed down the side of a works building in a quiet area. The chain had been removed for some reason, but I got the impression it was being stored there to wait for the heat to die down, as who would store a stolen bike in a piece of private land for no reason?

The Police were called, but I'm certain it was Pikey's who were responsible from one of the many caravan sites like rabbit warrens in the countryside.

I hope you find your bike, and that it's not burnt. But yeah definitely get out and about within a few miles radius of home and search any public spaces, woodland and around unmanned buildings etc.

I wish where I live I could ride my KMX up the stairs and through the door into my living room. Id be happy to sit watching the tv at night with it in the room safe, but access issues mean it can't live indoors dammit!

Id seriously recommend keeping your CRM in the house if and when you get it back.

It's your fault for having nice bikes.....The Scumtards do seem to prefer dirtbikes and sportsbikes.

Maybe it's only a matter of time before they switch to sportstourers.....Then I'll get done over.

They came in the house, rummaged cupboards and found the keys - me and the kids were asleep upstairs (mrs was out on the lash w/ her sister). But ironically this got the busies' attention. I'm not saying it means it's more likely that I'll ever see the bike again (I surely won't). But the crime is not simply one of twoc-ing or whatever. It's the more serious one of burglary. So who knows. Maybe 5-0 will try a bit harder?

Cop said to me on Sunday morning "seen any unfamiliar faces around recently - any people knocked on for any reason, etc.?" Etc. etc. No, I said - nobody, nothing like that.

Later that day I remembered - there've been guys in hi-viz jackets working the verges, bagging up tidied edgings and what not. I rang the cops back and asked for the PC who'd been round and told him. He'd seen them himself (they were out on the sunday morning). Turned out they were guys on probation. I dunno. Probably means jack shit and won't go anywhere. But it's a lead of sorts, I suppose. I'm still very pessimistic (read realistic) though.
