So, for those of us without cars or endless money to pay British Rail...

How do you guys go about doing interviews that you have traveled to by bike?

I was contemplating a box on the back for the pressed suit, but being large, it would be quite a big box without creasing the suit, and that risks parasailing off.

Or... just neglect the suit jacket?

I don't wear a jacket to interviews.

You'll need somewhere to stash your lid/gear though, you'll look like a knob carrying it around all day.

Oh, and good luck Thumbs Up .

Seems wrong to say this on a bike forum, but some places it may be worth leaving the bike at home rather than give them a reason not to hire you when you show up in a crumpled shirt from being underneath your leathers, damp from your waterproof gear leaking etc... Train/taxi starts to seem like a good investment if it means that you get the job Mr. Green

With that said, I've done it before, wore trousers, shirt + tie under my leathers, with suit jacket (carefully!) folded in topbox. Left all my gear with the bike and they had no idea until I mentioned how I'd got there.

In some companies it'll give you something to talk about in the interview to make it a bit more memorable, some places will disregard you entirely because the interviewer doesn't like bikes.

Aye, trying desperately not to spunk money. Train/Coach is triple the price, maybe more. Plus serious ballache.

Bike is relaxing and happy.

Interview is for a practical job (gas fitter) so they should be ok with bikiness.

No suit jacket in interviews... I thought I was a maverick for wearing no tie.

Can't go no tie AND jacket, that way is anarchy.

It really doesn't, unless you're using "air quotes" when talking about riding at "motorway speed".

Roll, don't fold.

Or wear a waistcoat. The hoi polloi will assume that must have just handed your jacket to your butler.

Surely suit and tie is not required apparel for a gas fitters job? Surely most candidates will turn up in curry stained t shirts and ripped dirty jeans Laughing

I have been to a few interviews recently, but I have a crease-resistant M&S suit and can wear the trousers under over-trousers, and fold the jacket neatly and store it in the top-box until I get there - or I can wear it under my bike-jacket if I take the thermal lining out first.

There's enough room in the top-box for the bike-jacket, gloves and over-trousers, if I leave the helmet on the under-seat hook, and I get there early enough to freshen-up and fix my helmet-hair in the gents.

If I didn't have a top-box, I would wear the suit underneath the bike-jacket and over-trousers, get changed in the gents when I get there, and ask the receptionist nicely to keep the gear stashed until I am ready to leave.

I've had people turn up to interviews in their bike gear, and just ask if they can use the loos to get changed.

I see no harm in that. Shows you're wanting to be as presentable as possible for the interview. It's the same as popping to the loo to check your hair before the interview.

Also, fold your suit jacket inside out, creases less that way.

I was thinking to stash my bike in the local town centre, pop to loos in Tesco to change, and walk over from there. Nowhere to stash bike gear unfortunately.

Not a bad idea - some supermarkets have lockers for customers to store stuff while they shop.

Does the place have a reception? Phone them up, explain the situation and ask if there's parking/place to stash gear/get changed.

Suit may not look so fancy after an hour on the motorway...

Situation seems solved now, thanks to a BCF'er actually.

I got changed in the underground car park of the Ark building for an interview with GE. I'm so glad no one walked past.

Funnily enough I was about to suggest such a thing, always worth asking around.

Surely, your bikeiness is a big plus point to a potential employer, as it shows you're not tied to crappy and oft delayed public transport and neither will you be stuck in huge tail backs in you car. As such, you're more likely to arrive for work on time each morning. Of course, not all employers will necessarily see this logic...

Too rational.

Motorcyclists are hateful, impatient creatures who kill kittens and seduce daughters with one wheeled death rides...

I tend not to mention bikes until after I've started the job. I'd hazard that negative biases against bikes/bikers outweigh the positives.

Bike should be a plus to an employer, means one less employee blaming lateness on cancellations/traffic, and the mind numbing tales of how they missed the 6.42 and couldn't get a seat on the 7:15 which was diverted via Sleeping

Far more incidents of minor prangs resulting in days off sick, I shouldn't wonder. Plus flat tyres, etc., are a show stopper on a bike.

Was interviewing for jobs just before Christmas. All were high level jobs in very corporate companies, and I had no issue riding to them.

Generally you arrive and goto reception anyway, just quickly change there. I wore a suit underneath my textiles, minus the jacket which I didn't bother with at all, and left my gear at reception. Nobody batted an eyelid to be honest, and I ended up getting offered 3 of the positions I applied for.

At the risk of stating the obvious. I used to carry my suit and my uniform when I was in the TA in a suit carrier.

Strapped it to the pillion.

They now make a thing called a skyroll which seems even more motorcycle-stowable. Looks like you'd get it in a drybag.
