morning fellas... I know some of you are alp veterans so I'm just after some advice really.

with how much reliability is the st gotthard pass open during august? I know it's a bit like how long's a piece of string, but just in your experience...

we're getting married in northern Italy in 2016, and I'm riding down as I can't be bothered with car hire costing more than the fuel. so she can have a nice relaxing flight, and I'll get a jaunt on the bike. win win!

was planning overnight ferry, blast down to freiberg from like 4am til whenever it takes. and then from there head down past konstanz, through st gotthard and down to verbania, omegna and orta san giulio...

seems a reasonable trip for not a lot of cash, I get to cross off st gotthard, and I get to use my bike whilst over there rather than a poxy fiat 500 where I keep bashing my elbow into the door.

but... I need to be in Italy for x amount of days before the wedding, so if I'm having to stop, turn back and go round... this could be an issue...

TL:DR... getting married in Italy - cba with car hire - riding down - delay might be issue - am I gonna get stuck at the border due to snow in august?

Hi ocatoro,

the gotthard pass will be normally open until end of October if no early winter will coming into the land!

So, you will have the possibility to reach your wedding Very Happy

Good luck and greetings from Zurich/Switzerland,
Fredy

There is a chance of a few hours closure due to snowfall even in August but it would soon be cleared.
It would be wise to keep in touch with conditions and have an alternative route in mind (not necessarily the tunnel!) considering a day delay might be unacceptable.
With smartphones it's easier than in the past where you had to look out for advice notices as you approached.

cheers dudes.

we got stuck at the top of the col de la lombarde last summer and had to turn back due to snow. was a LOOOOOONG way back round haha.

wasn't so much of a hardship though, the road was spectacular. by far the best pass i've been on technically. so having to hoon back down it was a pleasure. and then the alternative route was pretty decent too.

Last time I came through there in August there was a three hour queue heading north from Italy, would of been okay if I didn't have three screaming kids in the car and a winging missus Twisted Evil

This is a sad trueness!
In the summertime and especially on the weekends, there are a lot of traffic through the tunnel. At this time, during the day, they will open him for block dispatch. So it can be an nerve-stretching travel.

If you have time to passing the Swiss Alps, I suggest you to drive via the following region and passes: Basel-Emmental (home of the original swiss cheese)-Bernese Oberland-Grimsel Pass-Nufenen Pass (up to 2478 m high) and then down the whole canton of Tessin to the Lake Maggiore.

On the link up from doggone, you will find all informations about obstructions of traffic.

Greetings,
Fredy

If you got enough time to travel from German/Swiss frontier to the region of Orta, it will be a relaxing alternate route. It could be longer in distance but impressive landscapes on the route and also the travel along the Lake Maggiore is grandiose.

Another way down to Orta, if you dont have to travel via Lake Maggiore:

From the Grimsel Pass rund down the valley of Rhone to Brig and then crossing the Simplon Pass and directly to Orta.

Fredy

well this is bearing down on us.. so another thread resurrection (easter pun intended)

so.. looking at the map.. grimsel -> furka -> st gotthard on the way through

google maps will not at all let me on the furka pass from the end of the grimsel.

anyone know why? has it been destroyed or something?
(bearing in mind it's been like it all of last year too so it's not because it's currently snowed under)

zooming in on the map and the road is unbroken but it seems to want to throw me on a train or something bypassing the furka pass.

here's a link to the stretch i'm talking about. can someone shed some light and assure me I can drive that route so I can make alternate plans

https://goo.gl/maps/kuXAFFNGMF52

cheers dudes

Tyre to travel kept doing this whilst I was planning our route last year and that is google maps based, the road will be open so just navigate accordingly, we went in early June. I would suggest that if you are going on your bike you should take the Tremola( the old gotthard pass) instead of the St Gotthard pass, its an awesome bit of road, don't let the cobbles put you off, the scenery is awesome.

I rode the Furka and Grimsel in June last year without a hitch, as well as the Tremola and the often overlooked Nufenenstrasse Thumbs Up

However, I couldn't get onto the St Gotthard Pass from the Susten Pass as the road was closed due to landslide. You had to take the tunnel or take the long way round to Italy (which is what I did).

ok cheers lads, it does certainly look "as simple as that" on the map, but wanted to check with folk who've tested my theory.

sadly not on the bike this time, having to carry a load of wedding and baby gear down (mrs is flying separately so dragging a mate down in car Smile )

If you're trying to map it now it's not routing you as furka is currently closed, see https://www.myswissalps.com/car/trafficinfo for details. Last year was affected by a landslide just outside andermatt (I was there when it was opened after repairs).

cheers for the link. most useful!

maybe when I've been looking throughout the year has just happened to coincide with bloody closures then as I don't ever recall it letting me join them up..

if this is the case too though... why does google let you on grimsel and gotthard, which are both closed on your link?
