Hi all, it's that time of year again. Laughing

Last year I paid £305 TPFT with a £300 excess.

This year I'm getting quotes of £145 with Bennetts and a £200 excess..!

First query:

When picking insurance, they always try to add in optional extras at the end such as;

Legal cover
Personal Injury
Helmets and leathers etc etc...

Is 'Legal cover' necessary? I seem to remember someone posting a link to a company offering free legal cover but I can't remember if this is right or not.

What are your thoughts? It's an extra £30 taking it up to £175.

Bikesure however will insure me and allow me to ride other bikes and include legal cover for £188.

2nd query:

As I've just built a timber workshop at the bottom of the garden... I rang Bennetts and the girl said 'What would you class it as..' I said 'A timber workshop with a locking door'

She said, well, I can put that down as a garage so long as you are happy it's a garage... *sigh* as long as it would pay out if it got stolen Laughing

Cheers,
Tom Thumbs Up

I had two choices for my (current) first year of insurance.. two quotes that I could afford.. option 1 was the cheapest and included not even breakdown cover of witch I viewed as a sensible extra to have.. so I opted for option B a little more expensive but had all the saucy extras.. best of all when I did break down (electrics failure, wouldn't start) I decided to embark on the longest several miles of pushing home.. bike started one last time and somehow got home.. anyway.. point being that even with the saucy extra available I didn't use it.

Thinking about what I'll do at the time of renewal.. try and find a policy that suits meets my required level of cover and has breakdown cover.. everything else is just there to push the prices up.

&.. don't some insurance companies ask for pictures or proof of the garage the bike is stored in?

No you don't need legal cover.

In fact, it's completely worthless so you'd be a mug to pay for it.

I'd be wanting something in writing to confirm that a wooden shed is accepted as being a garage.

Basturds. I thought it seemed suspicious. Little money maker, glad I got BCF's input, they're all at it.

Out of interest, why don't I need it Ste? Any good links?

Any yeah, she implied that me stating that over the phone on record was enough, and then put it down as 'Garaged' for the quote. Very odd!

I'll double check it all if I phone back..

Obviously I want it insured, but TPF&T is cheaper than TPO, and in all honestly even if it did get nicked I probably wouldn't claim. (Weighing it up in the long run)

Cheers. Thumbs Up

I always just ask for the basic premium and once they have taken off the "extras" it's usually £50 cheaper straight away.

My current insurer of 3 years has free helmet and leather cover. (I've never used it but it's nice to know its there)

Hang on a second.

Yes, it used to be a total scam, since under the circumstances where it would kick in, you'd get a conditional fee firm doing it at the other party's cost anyway.

However, now that up to 25% of your winnings goes to the leeches, it might make sense.

Probably not, but it might. I've pondered on it a bit more recently. Still not taken it though.

And you have to use the shit company your insurers gicve you. Like quindell. So stupid they simultaneously insist that my policy covers their fees whilst they detail the 25% they want and the ATE insurance in case they fuck the case up.

I am usually careful to de-select all of the optional extras, including legal cover, but for the last couple of years it has been included as part of the policy (Octagon) for my car at no additional cost - or at least there was no reduction in premium offered for not having it.

This was only when paying in full at the time of renewal, so it may have been a paid option when paying by instalments.

Legal insurance – a cautionary tale.

I used to have legal insurance provided through work.

To cut a long story short: Several years ago, my car was written off while parked. The third party insurer accepted liability and paid out for the car after a few weeks.

But I was left with about £1,000 worth of out of pocket expenses which the the third party insurer refused to pay for.

Now I don't believe in ramping up insurance claims, but I'll be buggered if I'll swallow £1000 loss over something that everyone acknowledges isn't my fault.

So, “Why have a dog and bark yourself?” I thought and invoked my Legal Insurance.

The Legal Insurers passed the claim to Irwin Mitchell Solicitors (a useless bunch of incompetents). They took months to deal with anything, wanted copies of absolutely everything and then advised that there was “No realistic prospect of success” - in a case of strict liability. Rolling Eyes

I then wrote to the third party insurer telling them that they had 7 days to cough up or I'd take them to the Small Claims Court.

They coughed up (they couldn't not – they were liable, end of).

The only effect that the Legal Insurance had was to delay the process by about 4 months.

In future, if I need a lawyer I'll pay for one. They can stick legal insurance where the sun don’t shine.

Irwin Mitchell are good at their Google Fu & Google ranking, I wonder how long it'll take them to arrive at this page.

Love, peace and chicken grease to all those at Irwin Mitchell who happen to read this. Wub
