Anybody done it? Worthwhile?

Is running locally for £20, which is cheaper than the bikesafe I did last year. It will likely cost me more in petrol. Claims to actually reduce insurance premiums. Skeptical.[/b]

Yes; it was a bit like Bikesafe, but better, as the instructor was in radio contact.

It did balance a still-on-going claim (so currently have to put "at fault") from about 18 months ago so the premium didn't increase; and it was nice to be able to put "... I have passed an ERS with an A grade" at the top of my recent accident report - I feel that should help argue against contributory negligence and put a little more weight on my version.

Depends what riding you experience - a certificate may show to someone who wasn't there that you've spent a day riding under supervision and displayed competence to a set level, having had the day's experience with someone advising.

not everyone can experience riding through a stone wall.

DfT was sniffling recently about how few people were doing it; this could be a Spring marketing push.

Thing is, my understanding is it's entirely down to the individual trainer, and is not meant to be a one-off event, but an assessment leading to any necessary training.

If most folk are just being given a gold star then it calls into question the usefulness. Same with Bikesure - according to the Dibble doing mine, it's not being done by the riders who would benefit the most from it.

Still... £20 is still a bargain for a decent evaluation.

Any saving on your insurance is a bonus, but don't do it for that reason alone - do it to help you stay safe on the roads and not need to make a claim in the first place Mr. Green Considering all the other costs of maintaining a bike, buying helmet/safety gear etc, £20 is nothing.

My bike is my transport and I've been at it 3 and a half years now, and I've always been determeind to be as good a rider as I can be. If I find something I can't do, I drill it until I can. The bikesafe I did made me think about my position in the road more. I'd rate my riding as OK, but I'm sure there are things I don't know I suck at, which is what an observer is for.

I suspect the riders these courses target are the ones they're never going to get, the riders that believe they are somehow invincible.

I'll post again when I have done it.

+ £20 quid for the fuel and his bacon sandwich for the priveledge of lecturing you on how to do it right when you probably know anyhow.

I've got a mate who joined IAM after being off bikes for donkeys years, fair play, he needed to but 2 years later he's observing people and telling them what they are doing wrong. He is crap but he has some certificate saying he is qualified.

In the end it's down to you, do a bikesafe for sure but after that what will others teach you? It's down to you and unfortunatley there is no substitute for experience, good or bad. It's just if you are lucky and learn from it.
