I'm new to riding and need to get some products to help maintain my bike.

I have a 2001 Hornet 600 and I think I need the following:
Chain lube, Engine oil and some cleaning bits.

Does anyone have any recommendations of products and places I can buy the above online or from a local business in Bristol?

Chain lube: Can be gotten in Halfrauds. I find the WD-40 Specialist stuff works just fine. Anti-fling etc. In all honesty they all do the same thing.

Engine Oil: I personally buy this online, either ebay or 'Opie Oils' which sometimes have some good deals going. Easy 15% off too by going to the checkout then close the tab, you'll get a pop-up.

I like to use Castrol Power 1 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Castrol-Power-1-4T-10w-40-Motorcycle-4-Stroke-Engine-Oil-10W40-4-Litre-4L-/181167222615?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a2e686f57

Can't go wrong with it. Obviously double check what your bike needs but more than likely the same!

Cleaning bits: Halfrauds again! I really like the 'Muc-off' speed polish. It literally works wonders and gives the bike a brilliant shine and feel!

Thumbs Up

Halford's will do WD40 (and other) branded chain cleaner and lube. It's worth buying a chain brush, probably best done online. You can buy them on eBay, I've just had 2 arrive from Asia for less than £2 each.

Sportbikeshop.co.uk lists most things and then you find the item for cheaper on Amazon. Your bike's manual will tell you what oil you can and can't buy.

Buy a tyre pressure gauge and pump if you've not already got them, I bought mine in Halford's but you can find cheaper.

For general washing, I really like Muc Off's pink spray (then finishing cloth) but everyone will have a favourite.

Opie oils is a rip off, you are often better off going to halfrauds (which is saying something!). If I wanted bike specific oil I'd buy it on eBay. As it stands I use Castrol GTX car oil in my CBR6 as it is often £10 for 4L in supermarkets.

For chain lube, I've yet to find anything better than gear/engine oil in a scottoiler. Chain sprays are pants IME.

I don't clean mine, so can't help other than to say paraffin is a great degreaser/solvent for oily crud and chains.

Remember WD40 is used as a cleaner, NOT a lubricant... it will destroy the O/X seals if you use it as a lubricant and isn't lubricating anything.

Also don't buy any oils with friction modifiers in, you'll quickly find your clutch slipping

To be crystal clear, that's WD-40 branded chain lube, not WD-40. [UPDATE - beaten to it!]

I use the cheapest engine oil that I can find, as do many others. Because I'm fancy, I use new stuff. Some people recycle their used engine oil onto their chain.

Are you freshly licensed up then? How did it all go?

Indeed I am, probably clocked up a good 400 miles since the end of February. Will have to modify my declared milage on my insurance before long.

Thanks for the information guys. Looks like a trip to Halfords might be in order as I would rather get it all in one go. I need to get some chain lube pretty sharpish and it is in dire need of a clean.

To be honest, I was expecting some replies along the lines of "KY Jelly, Vaseline or just good old spit"

Don't mention miles to insurer.

400 miles is not nearly enough when you pass your test sir. I do 300 a week in commuting Laughing

Oil I'm cheap and often so Morrisons own and 1500-2000 miles

When I originally got a quote I didn't put in the milage and it was about £150, then when I called to run through it they said it was for 1500, I said, ermm, best make that 5000.

I work from home so won't be doing mega miles. Been an unusual month with a trip to Brighton and to Worcestershire.

I'm using bike specific oil but not too fussed who's or where it comes from (although I've been avoiding Halfrauds own)

car oil often has friction reducing stuff added which can affect the bike's clutch.

for the chain I use a loobman ( www.loobman.co.uk ) and used, filtered engine oil (I do my own servicing) or halfrauds cheap 10/40w

In a hornet 600 I would use whatever oil was on offer aslong as it matched my bikes specific grade.. It's better to use a cheaper brand more often than leave a decent one ages.

Chain lube, go down the route of wd40 chain lube and cleaner package. Good stuff just make sure u apply 24 hours before riding else itl all fling off.

Every now and then I clean my chain and apply some gear oil for periodic times when it's gonna be stood up. The oil helps the o rings. I then wipe away as much as I can with kitchen roll and apply the wd40 specific lube to seal in the goodness Mr. Green

Chain lube - a dab of engine oil and a paintbrush every week, whilst giving you a chance to check over the chain (probably saved my life the other week if anyone saw the ruined link I found).

Engine oil - get yourself a oil and filter set off ebay for £20 odd quid.

Cleaning - Warm soapy water, GT85 and FS365.

Avoid putting premium car oil in your engine, cheap car oil works becaue there is little if any in the way of friction modifiers to mess up your clutch.

FYI Castrol GTX car oil doesn't interfere with bike clutches.

I've been using it in my bike for about 5 years.

For cleaning i use autoglym shampoo and conditioner, costs about 6 quid from halfrauds for a little bottle and lasts ages (2 capfuls per bucket), leaves a slight coating which helps when you next clean it.

I use wd 40 to clean my chain and i've currently got muc off dry chain lube, seems to be working well. Bit of cardboard behind the bit of chain im cleaning so it doesn't go all over the rear wheel, spray on work in with an old tooth brush to loosen the grime and wipe off with an old rag

With regards to engine oil i haven't had to do a service yet but will probably go with Motul as i've used this on previous bikes and they were okay, not to badly priced either.

For oil, I normally use Motul 5000 or 5100 because you can get it cheap, with a filter thrown in, off eBay.

For chain lube, I use either PJ1 Blue Label or just engine oil (sparingly applied to the chain with an old paint brush).

For cleaning, SDOC 100 gets anything off anything. It's a heavy duty rather than a general purpose cleaner though. For normal cleaning I just use whatever car shampoo is on special offer in Tescos.

I picked up two 5litre bottle of pink muc off bike cleaner for about £20 on eBay about 2 years ago. Halfway through the first bottle. Have supplied friends with enough to clean a car from my supply because it works well for cars covered in tree goop and bird shit. Think I cleaned the kitchen with it when it was utterly trashed by housemates painting project and there was no kitcheny cleaners to be found.
