Hi all,

I'm looking for ex-bike couriers to share some of their stories for a feature in a forthcoming issue of Practical Sportsbikes magazine. If you've got any photos of courier life back in the glory days of the 70s and 80s, that would be all the better.

If you'd be up for helping, drop me a line at gingersgaff@btinternet.com or give me a bell on 07875 736021.

Hope to hear from a few of you...

All the best,

Gez Kane, Practical Sportsbikes

79's & 80's? Why just those 2 years? Wink

Edit - posting for phone number storage. Well, you never know.

There were virtually no couriers in the 70's, the industry was just starting. The early 90's were where it was at when the industry peaked with somewhere in the region of 5000 couriers in London.

Agreed.
I started in 1993, there were probably 100 bikes working Bristol alone, now there are about 4.

So, 70's and 80's, too early for me.

Unlikely to be many photo's.
Signing on and working as a courier was not unheard of. Allegedly.
Hence, lets have a group photo with our radios and bikes as we stand around Clerkenwell Green never went down well. Tourists might have been told to f off by the less friendly. Especially if it was raining.

Hi all,

Thanks for the input. Good call on the dates - let's expand it to include the 90s. I know what you mean about the photos - who takes photographs of themselves at work? But someone out there might have one or two...

Bring on the 90s stories...

Cheers,

Gez

I did 3 years in the 70s- and survived somehow- Pony express and Arrow Mercury etc

remember picking up a fellow messenger who had broken down on his ariel (we both lived in the east end)

when I picked him up- he stripped radio and top box off- removed the battery and number plate off the bike and we rode off and left it in in the kerb !

it would probably be a £2,000 basket case sale at a Bonhams auction now!

Having spent a few years peddling various unsuitable lumps of Jap crap around the big smoke, I sent yerman an email and have yet to get a reply.........

Maybe I'll get my own collection of tall tales together and publish a book.

I didn't with to be rude - well, not more than usual - but it did occur that there are plenty of ways now to find an audience for interesting anecdotes.

I'm sitting comfortably.

Which Pony depot, Vauxhall?

Considering where you lived was this how you got involved with Motad?

Pony express original depot in Wembley

remember doing a wait and return to Dover in February after a full days work- realised that I had ridden straight through a red light (knackered!) and started looking for motorcycle jobs inside the next day! (rivets, house of wheels, RB equipe and Mocheck before Motad)

I did two six months stint in Cardiff and to wherever in the late 80's for Wings and Cycle Despatch, put me off biking for a while the 2nd stint. I can't for the life remember exactly which years this was, 88 and 89 I think.

I started courier work as a stop-gap having the requisite bike and death wish. Laughing Laughing

Decided I had more than used up my nine lives when redundancy was forced upon me so took the money and ran. Wink
