I need a TV streaming box that works without any complex setup for my mum. Something that doesn't require Raspberry Pi's etc.

Seen a couple like Now TV and Roku but I need something that is internet based, rather than ariel based. Something decent that can hook in to any TV and stream over WiFi

Any suggestions?

So what exactly are you intending to watch on it?

And more important.... How much a month are you looking to pay???

Er, Roku's stream content over wifi, there is no better all round streamer out of the box that I'm aware of.

Left of field option, if she uses an iPhone or macs, Apple TVs and airplay are a pretty good way to go.

I was looking at those MT2 / MT3 / M8 boxes last night.... look good but you say all the channels stopped working?

Plus they are all XBMC, this has to be mother proof Laughing

Just needs to be able to stream live TV to the box, freeview / normal channels, she's not exactly going to watch a Swedish ice hockey match on Espn or anything.

So are those Android boxes garbage?

Amazon Fire TV - £79

Looks awesome, I want one.

From what I read XBMC can be side loaded onto it pretty easily by sacrificing one of the onboard apps that you don't use. For how little it costs it's gotta be worth a punt, right? HDMI, Wireless N, USB storage a possibility, even a SPDIF optical out for surround sound via older amps. Personally I'd want to use the USB to support an IR dongle for more remote codes (shortcuts to the TV/movie/music pages and other stuff in XBMC) but other than that looks like an excellent, inexpensive and powerful way to get a good LAN streaming box. Plus loads of streaming apps as stock, like the now ubiquitous Netflix, catchup TV.

Still don't get it... all the results / videos look like it picks up foreign channels, can't see it picking up any UK stuff?

Fire TV is great but no USB storage...
First set of boxes you could root, but amazon send sneaky FM updates.

M8 is good a lot better than mx2 I have two ,
Just download apps like mobdro.

Also look into card sharing

They do? Cheeky fucks. Wonder if there's a way to disable that before I connect it to the WLAN. And it's Android based, must be a way to disable updates although knowing Amazon eventually that would break the stock apps and if you use Netflix or similar a lot that could be a problem.

Pretty fuckin' arrogant to make that assumption for the user, Amazon.
