PostPosted: 21:30 - 26 Mar 2015    Post subject: Wheel Chocks for Transporting? Reply with quote

I'm planning to transport a fairly heavy bike in my (flatbed) trailer, and was thinking about fitting a wheel chock at the front to help support the bike in transit.

I was looking at the ones with a pivoted plate the front wheel rolls over, which then flips up and hugs the back of the tyre, if that makes sense!

But I've also seen the cheaper ones on eBay that just cup the front edge of the front wheel.

Has anyone here used either types for transporting a bike? Any advice on which ones to go for, or what to watch out for?

I'd like as cheap as possible, but it needs to work effectively...

Thanks in advance!

I have made some with just a tube bent to suit the tyre and a hump that you push it over. Photo tomorrow if you wish.

Pete, that's the 'better' ones I was looking at on eBay, but I'm wondering if the cheaper type ones are worth it.

Badger - if you could post some photos up to give me an idea that would be great.

Originally I was planning to make one, but figured I'd have to make it adjustable as I'd like to be able to carry mate's bikes as well if needed. That when I looked into the pre-made wheel chocks, but they aren't adjustable so I'm not sure if that idea is needed!

Now I'm on a PC rather than my phone, I can post pictures to show the types I mean! (Such a pity BCF doesn't have a mobile version, or work with Tapatalk!)

These ones start at around £30 on eBay:

These ones start at about £12:

The top one looks nicer, but there is a fair difference in price.

Will the bottom one hold it securely enough in a trailer? It will all be strapped down, but will be going on the motorway...

The plan is to make it detachable from the trailer, mainly so it doesn't get in the way of the trailers other uses, but also so I can put it in the van if required.
In the end I'll probably want two, so I can use the trailer as a single bike or double bike trailer.

With the bike(s) strapped down, wheel chokes are unnecessary.

You'll just need some eye bolts or other anchoring points in the trailer.

Thumbs Up

I've just fitted some new tie-downs to the trailer, as I just replaced the floor as well, so I should be able to strap it down securely.

But, the floor is OSB painted with a bitumen-type paint. If it even gets slightly damp I think it will be pretty slippery. My worry is that if the tyres slip, the bike will fall over.

I've only ever transported bikes in minibuses before, so the seats prevented any chance of them falling over. I've never used a panel van or trailer for it before!

I can't remember if the bike has a centre stand or just the side stand either...

That looks like a well made bit of kit!

Do you use it for transporting, or as a workshop paddock stand?

I made it to bolt into a van and it served well in that job but when I sold the van on I took it out and have used it in race paddocks. BTW I have no idea why those two boys were in my classroom!

After much pondering I think I'm going to try bringing the bike back with no wheel chock.

If I'm not 100% sure it'll be secure enough I'll leave it and bring it back another time, after buying a wheel chock.

I'm hoping to grab it wednesday, so time is against me for postage anyway.

What bike?
naked? faired?
does the trailer have sides?
If so stick the front wheel in say the front LH corner and
lash it down well
OR get some timber and long screws and fit some impromptu 'chocks'
to the bed
If its just another CX, push it on the trailer, let it lay down on its side under a tarp and die in peace Laughing

It should be fine. What makes you think the bitumen paint would get slippery?
If you are concerned with sideways movement then just grab a couple more straps and use one on each wheel. Take a turn around the wheel as low down as possible and this should prevent any movement once the straps are tight.
People tend to overthink bike transportation and go overboard, I usually only ever use three of these to tie a bike down with...

It isn't another CX... its an existing CX! It's been locked up for a few years...

I've got some decent straps, so just going to see how it goes I think.

Re: the paint, it just seems that type of very water proof paint, where the water sits on top and makes it slippery. But it is OSB, so sould be some grip as it's rough...

CX?
not that heavy, put it on the side stand in first and use some ratchet straps
like they do on ferries, it'll be fine.

Yeah, I was probably over thinking it before! I've got some new straps from Costco, so they should hold it quite well.

Then it's just a case of seeing what the old girl needs to get back on the road!

Strap it properly, stick it in gear/cable tie the front brake lever on (if possible) and drive sensibly and you'll be fine.
