A row has broken out in the West Yorkshire town of Keighley over a councillor’s controversial plan to turn a pedestrian precinct into a “welcoming space” for local immigrants – by covering it with SAND.

Cllr Tamsin O’Shaughnessy (34) made the following statement:
“For many of Keighley’s residents, the bleak landscape – particularly in the winter – is an inhospitable, almost alien environment. By creating an area of the town with a “desert feel”, we hope to provide a familiar and welcoming experience to new arrivals – specifically those from the Middle East.”

Spent many a nice time in Keighley in my childhood as my grand parents moved up there late sixties (Prospect Mount) Even back in the mid 70's it was getting to become segregated by choice of the new inhabitants of a certain persuasion. Now all the town has been changed, even the Giant that used to be in the town center has gone because it offended. Although my Grandparents were a bit right wing (like a lot of their time) what they said at the time has come true. It is a place that once I enjoyed to visit, now I feel very vulnerable and almost threatened when visiting. Th town has changed.
