First off I'm using the windows 10 technical preview as the OS on my laptop.

Since this morning I've been unable to connect to the internet both through a wired and wireless connection. No internet based program can connect at all. The error that chrome identifies is DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET.

Other computers on my network can connect to said laptop. AVG removed a piece of adware Sunday night.

This made me think that the adware had messed with my proxy setting but they all seem clear in the registry and internet explorer options.

I've also tried setting the DNS manually to google's public DNS.

I've now exhausted all my knowledge. thoughts?

Can you ping your router? Can you ping Google's DNS?

yes. Can ping the google DNS from the command prompt.

Forgot to mention one of the other things I've checked is that the hosts file has not been modified.

At least you know it's definitely a DNS issue and not a connectivity issue. Unfortunately my knowledge of Windows is stuck there.

Within the command line in Windows can you use command lines such as "host bikechatforums.com" to see if your DNS is resolving at all? Do you have a /etc/resolv.conf file or equivalent in Windows?

yes, can ping bikechatforums and google from the command line.

I've checked the windows hosts file and that seems fine. I will admint I had to do a google search to check if that existed on a windows box.

I managed to install opera browser and that still has the same issues. It is most definitely a DNS issue like you said but is only limited to browsers.

The issue that still confuses me is that you can configure separate DNS settings per adapter. Plugging in the ethernet and switching the wireless off via a hardware button did not solve the issue.

solved.

I checked the log file of the netsh reset command and found that there was a permissions issue preventing the reset of the registry keys.

I set the permission to allow everyone to edit (probably a bad idea) and rerun the netsh commands and it seems to work. There may now be a gaping hole in my registry but I don't really care as my new SSD should arrive any day now.

thanks for the help.
