So after finding that the bike wont kick i put a new spark plug in and a week or so later i think it has been fouled by excessive amounts of oil.

The plug is very black when i pull it off

Now, the bike wont start anymore, not even a bump start.

Things i will be ordering tonight are:

New spark plug
New HT Coil

Other than that when the bike is running it is sputtering loads.
I have just installed an air filter as the previous owner seems to have thought it was not a needed part.

Any other things i can try in the meantime?[/img][img][/img]

Looks like soot to me rather than oil, i.e. running rich.

And he'll have had it running rich as well because racebike.

With any luck all he's done is set the idle mixture rich, and maybe moved the needle up. Worse case, he's been at the jets, but I wouldn't assume that straight away.

Any clues what bike, or shall we guess from the plug? Gilera!

Back up a bit.

What adjustments?

Back up further, what bike?

What I'd do is clean the plug thoroughly (or get a new one), then start the bike up and let it idle. Don't rev it. Get it off the choke as soon as possible and be sure that the choke is actually coming off. Double check that the air filter is correct and that there's nothing blocking it.

Then tune just the idle mixture, aiming to maximising the revs, let it run for a bit longer then check that the plug isn't fouling.

It's unlikely that the previous owner has meddled with the idle jet (if it's got one rather than just a bush) so if you can't get the idle mixture right then something is seriously wrong.

One step at a time though, don't just start throwing parts at it or changing multiple things at once.

You previously posted about a Gilera RCR50, so I assume we are still talking about the same machine?

I would spend my time and effort getting the relevant parts and configuration back to the factory settings - so do you have a workshop manual to go by?

I get the impression that either you or the previous owner wasn't entirely satisfied with the performance and has attempted to squeeze a few more horses out of it - but you will never solve these problems unless you can get the engine running with the original setup.

The main things to concentrate on, are Compression, Valve and Ignition Timing, Spark Plug type and gap (why doesn't anyone check the gap any more?), Carburettor jetting and adjustment.

Sometimes I think it's unfair to just assume that anyone who doesn't bother to provide enough information to get useful help is on a Gilera ped, and then this thread happens.

Yes, put it back to stock. Sell any stage 97 red powerbands and put it all back to stock.

Quite right!

OP - please confirm make and model, or include it in the thread title for better quality replies.

Rogerborg's comments, and mine are pretty safe though - use a workshop manual to get the engine back to standard, then get rid.
