I noticed the damn van as I came over the brow of a hill on some duel carriage way. It a 40 limit and I was doing fifty. I immediately slowed before passing it then turned left off the duelly about 20 yards beyond the van. Would its rear camera be wide angle enough to have got my plate. The van actually parks up about five yards parralel to the carriageways on a side road running parralel to the dually so I'm hoping turning left close enough to the van I may not have had my plate visible to it. If I do get done what's 50 in a 40 going to cost me?

Just because your indicated speed was fifty it doesn't necessarily mean you were actually going that fast.

When you see a camera van its too late to slow down, it will have already pinged you at speed.

Yep. Apparently they can catch you up to half a mile away, but they're aware that you can spot them from further than that so they prefer to hide just around a corner coming into a lower speed limit area. Easy pickings.

I got speed awareness for doing 48 in a 40, I thought I was doing well over 50 at the time so didn't feel too bad about it.

I rekon my speedo is out by 3% so they will have pinged me at 48.5mph coming towards them. Its whether I managed to avoid their rear facing camera by turning left just after the van. Do they send you a picture like with bus lane cameras?

my Yamaha over reads by 96/90 I suspect yours won`t be far out .. how worn are your tyres/tires ?

but my figures that gives 46.857 @ an indicated 50mph.

Speed limit: 40 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 46 mph
Summons: 66 mph

pray your tires are well worn.

You do know that your number plate is on the back and their camera can't follow you through their vehical?

So they won't have radar/lazer evidence of speed and your number plate in one continous video? I'd be asking for evidence that it was me.

They have a camera in the back of the van. They clock you coming towards the van then get your play as you head away from them.

Did 50 on a dual carriage way that is 40 and slowed as soon as I saw the copper.
Never heard anything but then those slow down signs usually say thank you when I'm doing 5mph more than the limit Smile
You'll prob be ok

They didn't with the Scamera Van that got me for 36 in a 30.
Although I would have liked to have a copy for posterity, speeding on a CG is chuckleworthy. Very Happy

If you're only 10 over and turned off right after passing the van you might have got away with it. If I remember rightly the speed vans can only track one vehicle at a time, and they try to scan vehicles on both carriageways at the same time (cars coming towards the back of the van and going away from them) so they might have been focusing on another vehicle.

There's a really nasty one on the A3 between the M25 and where the kingston bypass begins/ends, it parks on a raised platform on the southbound side just off from the hard shoulder, where the road both bends sharply and the limit slows from NSL to 50mph. From the northbound lane you can't see it until you're very close, so it catches cars who've just passed the 50 sign but are still doing 60-70. Also fear it might have caught me out today as well. Confused

Nope. They're only scanning vehicles on the side of the road that the scamera van is parked on.

However there is one mobile camera van that likes to perch on a raised 'patrol vehicles only' layby on the A46 Swainswick bypass heading down towards Bath, with the camera facing downhill.

Sounds fairly typical, except there's a gatso not twenty meters up the road that already has the downhill carriageway covered, everybody still slows for it.

It's actually focused on the dual carriageway going uphill out of Bath, so it's on the opposite side of the road that it is watching. Perfectly located and out of sight just beyond the crest of the hill, on a fully enclosed and barriered dual carriageway, with zero kittens. Thinking

Cellotape your phone to your bike and get a speedometer app, hold it at an indicated 50. I'd be surprised if it was over a real 45. I'd imagine the speed trigger in the van to be 47/48.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I know its hard not to think about it as is it really does play on your mind for the next few days, but you need to just say f**k it and then deal with it later if anything lands on the doormat.
