Pornographic websites will be blocked unless they implement proper age controls to protect children under a future Conservative government, the Culture Secretary has said.
Sajid Javid said that pornographic websites should be subject to the same level of age verification as DVDs sold by high street retailers. He said that as a father of four young children he worries about “how easy it is for them to view explicit material” and the damage it could do.

It's about time the youth of today had some barriers between them and decent porn. Back in the 90s, we had to make do with either late night telly on mute so your parents didn't hear (red shoe diaries, eurotrash etc) or else occasionally you'd find a damp copy of razzle in the woods. That was it.

hang on, just one second here. done pretty much all modern computing systems come with parental control? heck BT even asked me if I needed parental control on my net connection, so there are at least 2 layers of "protection" there. if the parents are unable to control what the kid is doing then maybe they are unfit parents and the child should be removed for the custody.

Personally I don't see what's wrong with having tougher age restriction things on websites. No idea how they'll go about doing it, but the intentions are, as said, exactly the same as preventing kids from buying 15 or 18 rated movies.

Also I don't think the 'parents responsibility' argument holds much water. There are loads of rules, regulations and procedures in place to protect adults, where you could argue that we're quite capable of looking after ourselves if only we'd be more responsible. e.g. drink driving rules. "Oh we don't need a drink driving law, we just need the drinkers to be more responsible!"

Children are more vulnerable than adults, and you can't just say the parents are doing a bad job at policing their kids. Currently if I had children I think I'd pretty much have to accept that they'd be able to see some very dodgy content quite easily, unless I wanted to become Hitler-Dad and place ridiculous restrictions on them. It would just be shit for all involved. The easy way is for a sweeping change of general regulation. As I said, I don't know how it would necessarily be achieved, but I do agree with the overall idea.

after they were 16 they had no restrictions or me looking over there shoulder

as to Porn both my sons had been staying in the red light district in Amsterdam since they were barely teenagers
if anything it helped there outlook on life, my oldest son went to work in Belgium in a tattoo shop when he was 17

if anything its up to parents to look out for there kids not the nanny state

n the end, any censorship is good for the government, they can just blur the edges and start sneaking in more and more controls.
