Greetings,

Old laptops power connector and power supply shafted it, missus bought me a new laptop, so no point in bothering to repair the old one (besides I lost my temper and tore a bit of the plastic body off around the power connector anyway).

Anyways, I can fetch more cash selling it in parts than as a whole. The hard drive is a western digital 2.5" sata 250gb so will fetch about £20.

What's the best way to go about deep cleaning the hdd before flogging it, as I'm sure someone savvy enough could probably find credit card details etc if they were determined enough, so I'm doubting a simple format would suffice.

Any software recommendations?

Cheers,

GhostRider

Angle grinder. Thumbs Up

And you're meant to use an OS that's on a USB stick such as Tails. Wink

I use Darik's Boot and Nuke, seems to do the job, I think it just writes a bunch of 1's and 0's over the whole lot a couple of times or something to that effect.

This AKA DBAN. It wipes securely if you use it properly. Thumbs Up

most of the hdd vendors disk utilities will have an erase option.

Or burn a copy of hdat2 or mhdd to a usb and secure erase from there, you could then overwrite the drive with random files (millions upon millions of pics of nobcat?) to ensure what is underneath is harder to recover.

I once pulled the drive from a dead dell laptop that I had been given at first it looked like a fresh install of xp with nothing of interest on it but running piriforms recuva on it (nothing special as far as data recovery goes) and found the whole 40gb drive pretty much had once contained hardcore gay pron.

Boot it from a Linux Fedora live dvd, open a terminal session type:
fdisk -l
this will list the hard drives and partitions, you'll see something like:
/dev/sda
then you:

shred -v -z /dev/sda

That will write zeros to every address on the drive.

you could just buy an enclouser and use the hdd as an external.

never sell on harddrives, only smash the disk up!

Cheers for suggestions.

I started running dban.

An hour later it was at 13%, with 6.5hrs left. Fuck that, will try some of the other options. No need for it as a spare drive have plenty of space on other drives.

That's because it's thorough. If you find something that does it quickly then it's useless. Run it overnight. Thumbs Up

That depends how secure you want the erase.

A single pass of 0's will sufficiently stop most determined people from getting your data.

36 passes of random data will sufficiently stop highly skilled professionals spending many hours recovering enough data to incriminate you.

In reality, a single CC isn't worth that much on the dark web. It wouldn't be worth someone's time to forensically recover a properly wiped drive for a single CC.

I'd give it 1-2 passes of random data maximum and be done with it. Unless you've got something serious to hide from a prosecutor.

if you had something to hide it's the reallocated sectors you should worry about as they are not classed as useable by the drive so don't get overwritten.

You can ask dos based tools to reassess bad sectors and try to force delete on error, but as far as I know secure erase doesn't even touch the reallocated sectors.

And how exactly are these 'highly skilled professionals' gonna do that?

I'd imagine that some of the data recovery companies use proprietary software to perform recovery - which wouldn't work after the data has been overwritten for obvious reasons. I'd be happy to part with a hard drive after doing the kind of deletion mentioned there.

The only technique that I know of is Magnetic Forced Microscopy. It's not going to get you 100% data restoration. It's also a 30-year old technique that doesn't really work very well with the current highly-dense hard drives.

Secure Deletion of Data wrote:
9. Conclusion

Data overwritten once or twice may be recovered by subtracting what is expected to be read from a storage location from what is actually read. [...]

Epilogue

In the time since this paper was published, some people have treated the 35-pass overwrite technique described in it more as a kind of voodoo incantation to banish evil spirits than the result of a technical analysis of drive encoding techniques. As a result, they advocate applying the voodoo to PRML and EPRML drives even though it will have no more effect than a simple scrubbing with random data. In fact performing the full 35-pass overwrite is pointless for any drive since it targets a blend of scenarios involving all types of (normally-used) encoding technology, which covers everything back to 30+-year-old MFM methods (if you don't understand that statement, re-read the paper). If you're using a drive which uses encoding technology X, you only need to perform the passes specific to X, and you never need to perform all 35 passes. For any modern PRML/EPRML drive, a few passes of random scrubbing is the best you can do. As the paper says, "A good scrubbing with random data will do about as well as can be expected". This was true in 1996, and is still true now.

Looking at this from the other point of view, with the ever-increasing data density on disk platters and a corresponding reduction in feature size and use of exotic techniques to record data on the medium, it's unlikely that anything can be recovered from any recent drive except perhaps a single level via basic error-cancelling techniques. In particular the drives in use at the time that this paper was originally written are long since extinct, so the methods that applied specifically to the older, lower-density technology don't apply any more. Conversely, with modern high-density drives, even if you've got 10KB of sensitive data on a drive and can't erase it with 100% certainty, the chances of an adversary being able to find the erased traces of that 10KB in 200GB of other erased traces are close to zero.

So whilst this technique does still exist, it's highly unsuccessful for modern data recovery. It more indicates that there is still a minute risk in data deletion. However, the thought of somebody attempting this in the hopes of retrieving a single person's CC or Paypal account, from a HDD that may not even contain that information, is preposterous.

Only a single overwrite of a file, with any data, is required to stop off the shelf recovery tools from working. And to think that anybody is going to attempt anything more sophisticated than that to steal an everyday Joe's data is absolute paranoia in my mind.

Deal, have your people contact my people, we'll do lunch and negotiate the terms, draft up the contracts, then settle lands and titles.

So yeah, pm me.
