Hi guys, new to forum and also owning a cg125, went out today for first time, and to my surprise 1st and 2nd gear seemed to go forever, then third but then when in fourth the rpm starts to die and 5th is more or less death for the engine, only reaching 50mph flat out in 4th even though revs wouldn't peak, wot you think the problem maybe.

Cheers

Couple of things that might be worth checking...

* Air Filter
* Spark Plug / Replace / Correct / Check Gap / Check Mixture
* Coil, Spark Plug Cap & HT Lead Integrity ?
* Clean Carb Focusing on Main Jet
* Carb Settings
* Clogged Fuel Tap Filter / Fuel Pipe
* Fresh Fuel ?
* Binding Brakes ?
* Tyre Pressures ?
* Clogged Inline Fuel Filter (If it exists) ?
* Points ?
* Weeping Gaskets / Exhaust Gasket ?
* Blocked Exhaust ?
* Coke Buildup In Cylinder Head / Piston / Exhaust Port ?
* F*cked Up Front/Rear Sprocket Ratio ?
* Overheating ?

That's a good list to be going on with, don't think I can add anything to that! I'd check the sprockets first off as you only have to look at em.. Which I think for '85 onwards should be 14 front, 41 rear, and pre '85 is 15/34. Should also have an 18" rear tyre on for post '85 and a 17" rear for pre 85' - might skew the ratios evvvver so slightly Very Happy

Just rebuilt mine, and it's a bit of a mongrel but can get ~63mph in 5th, and a bit more down a hill Very Happy

I can get 65 on the clock on the flat, I put a 15t on the front as I have mainly flat riding and it stops the engine from screaming at 50 and above, I ride mostly around 40mph.

Wow wot a list lol, thanks for pointing out the things to check, it will be a great help, I did notice the exhaust was blowing out of where it fastens to the head, could this dampen the performance at all?

Yes, buy a new copper gasket from www.wemoto.com (usually about £1.50).

Exhaust removal on a CG is a very simple job, just 4 bolts typically.
Remove the old gasket, plop in new one, put exhaust back on, see if blowing has gone.
It's a crush washer/gasket so realistically every time you take it off you should change the gasket.

It's possible the exhaust blowing could be more significant damage but with any luck an idiotic previous owner or mechanic just forgot to put a new one on, or even just forgot to put one in all together.

Blowing downpipe could be the problem...

Wrap a couple winds of aluminum adhesive tape around it for now and see if it improves things : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141440388433
