You can actually make a two stroke start and run backwards. They sound a bit odd, had an RC car do it once.

Would reccomend taking all the kickstart mech out, thoroughly cleaning it, regreasing it then refitting. Sounds like it's staying engaged when the kickstarts springing back.

Electric starts probbably a wiring fault, is the solenoid clicking?

I'd quite like to try running a four stroke backwards.

I mean clamping a carb onto the exhaust stub can't be THAT hard surely? Laughing

sorry matey, I'll bet your woodruff key is missing or broken, you say you've replaced the stator, did you see a half moon piece of metal slotted in the crank? that has to be lined up with the flywheel and holds it in one place so it spins at engine speed and the timing pickup senses the timing point, if it is missing or broken the flywheel isn't locked by it at engine speed and it can at a different speed to the crank therefore upsetting the timing point, it's not a case of setting up the timing, the timing is set by the woodruff key holding the flywheel at a set point on the end of the crank.
