Ok so I think I have a new one. I do always take my lid off when filling up. At a Waitrose / shell station I was told I can't sit astride of my bike when filling up. Even with my lid off, engine obviously off and side stand down?
I do have an email thread between me and Waitrose which might interest some readers. And will copy and paste if anyone still reads this. And if anyone has verbosenes? or articulacy to respond to these people then I would love to hear from you as I think my angry words just will not win the battle. simonhopkin138@msn.com
If anyone in the know can bump this to a relevant thread then please point me in the right direction |

Fire bad, tree pretty.
Even without that, what happens when it froths up and spills over your nutsack? You jump off the bike, down it goes, everybody has a bad day.
Their gaff, etc. If you don't like the policy, take your £10 of no-profit business elsewhere. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Its not just to avoid standing up, with a bike with a small tank range it means you can fill the tank to the brim. |
Never known it make a difference on any bike I've ridden even when I've brimmed it on the ZZR both on centerstand or side stand, at un-manned asda I checked after filling on side stand, put it on centre stand and there was naff all space to put any more fuel in.
I still had my helmet on too!!!!!!!! (just before we get onto that one again) |
Makes a huge difference on some bikes. Particularly big trailies with small tanks which lean WAY over on the stand (My old MZ took another couple of litres if held vertically, the breather pipe would have fuel in it up to handlebar level once brimmed) or 90's suzuki sports bikes which have very wide, flat tops to their tanks.
In such a case, the discerning man about the forecourt gets off, deploys the stand then props his bike vertically up against his leg as if casually standing next to it while filling. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I never sit astride my bike when filling after my dad told me of the time he had his old Norton go up in flames when an attendant spilled it over (obviously when there were forecourt attendants).
I do always fill to the brim however, even if there's no centre-stand. It's really not hard to hold a bike upright with one hand. Stand on the off-side if it worries you so it can only wither fall against you or back onto the stand. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Makes me laugh, it genuinely does. It used to be that "bikers" were about personal freedom. The right to take risks as you saw fit and live with the consequences if you ran out of talent along the way.
Now? Well, suffice to say it doesn't surprise me to see people actually backing the idea that "get off the bike just in case it catches fire" is for the best
I await the letter writing campaign and petition to instigate mandatory CE approved armour at all times with interest, no doubt along with grassroots pressure to enforce leg protectors and a BHP limit. ____________________ I'm immortal. Well, so far. |
