Hi All,

I've recently passed my CBT (21st March) along with the wife after much convincing. Think her mum hates me now...

I've picked up Helmet, jacket boots and gloves, L plates etc and we're planning on riding around on a 125cc for 2-3 months before moving onto doing our DAS this summer.

I wouldve been happy going straight to DAS, but even though she passed her CBT with no issues, I'm sure she's got a confidence problem, so wants to pootle about on a 125 before taking the plunge.

Fair enough, so I've been looking for 125's for the last 2 weeks around the Swansea, South Wales area. Finally spotted something (YBR125) within our budget, however its 50 miles away in Cardiff.

I'm going to view it tonight and hopefully pick it up on the weekend. That should be very interesting as I cannot take the M4, so I'll be going on the A48 - A road all the way.

Wish me luck...

Congrats for eating your wife and then pooping her out.

YBR is a sensible choice, you shouldn't lose much money on it when selling it on. Be sure to check the threads on here on what to look out for when buying.

And don't delay getting your full license!

Just take it easy on the A48, remember your training and you'll be fine.

Do your DAS then move on to something bigger if you so choose but keep the 125 for the wife to gain confidence/experience.
Chances are she won't want to keep it for long.

See, I coulve written that I'd recently 'past' my CBT along with the wife, that would've been a great first post.

I've been carefully planning my route home to avoid all major roundabouts and any places where I may have to do a hill start... Laughing

So my route across South Wales looks a little like this - \/\/\/\/

All of this would be meaningless if the bike is a mess tonight however.

I'll see how she gets on with it.

I've still got the Theory to get out of the way between now and DAS, so I'll see how it goes.

Recman, seeing as you own one, what are your opinions on a Street Triple as a first bike? Too much?

Ah, the mother-in-law hated you anyway. The family that rides together... uh... abides together?

Sounds like a decent plan. Buying your first 125 is always a bit of a pain, what with the insurance and nobody wanting to give you a test ride. It'll build character though. Might want to plan in an early stop, to check over the bike once it's been running at speed, and to settle yourself down. 60mph on a bike is quite exhilarating the first time you do it.

YBR's a solid choice. Just keep on top of any signs of corrosion, especially on the fork stanchions.

Oh, and security! Yes, pikeys will have a 125, just to have it. Garage and/or a ground anchor and 16mm+ chain.

I managed 45 MPH on the YBR125 during CBT, that was down the Gower. Great ride that. Perfect weather.

60MPH? Character building?! Thanks for the confidence boost RB. I'll be wiping the seat afterwards.

I'll take your advice with regards to stopping once its up to temperature. Its just had an MOT too, so that would ensure that the bearings wheels/bars are ok wouldnt it? Will have a look for rusting.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, smother it in ACF-50 to fight corrosion.

Book your DAS course as early as possible because there may be a summer backlog.

Perhaps I'm nit picking but

She feels a little unconfident on a 125 so wants to go out on the roads having only had the most basic of training?

Surely, getting more training would improve her confidence rather than being forced into ditches by Shania and her chums in their Citroen Saxos (if chavs still drive these).

There will be. I did mine towards the end of summer last year and getting the test slots was still a pain, had to wait until cancellations came through. Also this looks like another cracking summer so don't waste all of it on a 125, they're so easy to outgrow even for a modestly skilled rider.

Dont get me wrong, she seemed fine on the roads, the CBT guy seemed to think so.

I think its probably more do do with the controls, making sure the checks are made, practicing road positionning etc. With having our own bike, we'll be able to choose when she wants to ride, practice what she wants in her own time.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but it seems like the best option for us at the moment.

It's fine, I was happy on a 125 for a year, although it will struggle on NSL roads in any kind of headwind or incline.

As long as she's confident enough to get up to speed and ride well out in the lane, no problem, fun will be had.

L plates do tend to encourage rage-overtakes though, which is a good reason to get licensed up ASAP, just to get rid of them.

Surprisingly, bigger bikes are easier to ride, once you get past the extra weight when they're not moving. Everybody says it, nobody really believes it. Wink

I understand your thoughts and many people have gone this route before you. I on the other hand did all the training at one, zero to hero in a month or so.

I'm not saying you get splatted but as Roger has mentioned, cars will try and overtake because of the L not the speed you're riding. I rode around on a CG for the last year and a half, and just because of the physical size, I had people overtaking me, just to do the speed limit in front of me.

I enjoyed the training I got which built up my confidence to ride on a bigger bike. Though riding a bigger bike makes you realise how much extra work you must put in to ride a smaller bike. You have nothing to lose getting experience on the "tiddler".

It's a curious system we've got, that sends people out almost untrained, with no theoretical knowledge, to ride wobbly bikes that need thrashing and tap danced up and down the box, while wearing 'treat me like vermin' plates.

Still, safety, innit.

It's starting to get busy for tests. The season has started. We're now looking mid May before we can get tests in Hampshire.

Well, went to view the bike. Looked immaculate, it's only done 4,000-ish miles, just had an MOT, service, 2 new tyres. The guy was willing to throw in the top box, heavy duty chain etc, so we agreed a deal.

I'm picking it up on Saturday afternoon.

I drove home the route im planning to take to avoid any unnecessary detours. Took me 2 hours in the car... but that was with rush hour traffic leaving Cardiff.

Will take the advice on booking the DAS early, I spoke to the bird about it and we'll see how she gets on with the bike over the next few weeks before making a decision.

Thanks for all your advice. It helped a lot last night.

Nice one, freshly MOTd, shod and serviced is the way to buy 'em.

Did my CBT in Haverfordwest a couple of years ago with an instructor from Swansea who had never been to H'west before.

So first thing that afternoon when we hit the roads, we went straight out, took the wrong turning off a roundabout and hit a national speed limit. 'Change up, change up, and change up' he said down the intercom thing 'erm...yes, change up again...keep going faster!' Lucky the intercom was only one way, I'm sure me and the other guy were just going 'shiiiiiiiiiiiiitt'!

Whereabouts are you based? Join the Wales section - we need more people!

Oh and if your wife has any doubts about moving up to DAS, let her keep the 125 for as long as she needs. Nothing worse than a confidence knock, I'm pretty sure I'm still affected by mine 18 months later.

Haha, I wouldve crapped my pants.

The guy who did our CBT was called Ian, it was with JT's in Swansea Centre. Reccomend them to anyone thinking of geting into biking in Swansea.

I have been accepted into the Wales Section. It does seem pretty quiet atthe moment. I've read a few posts on there, but Im not knowledgable enough to contribute anything at present..

Me and my girlfriend got a couple of YBR's and rode them for a year before taking our tests.
I was happy enough on the 125 till the summer but she insisted on taking her test in October. She passed and I was forced to take my tests in the freezing cold of November.
Pressure was on as I'd been biking years and she was new to them but I managed to pass everything first time.
The time on the 125 definitely did us good.Theres no rush to get a bigger bike.
We went on 90 mile coast runs and out in the peak district on our 125s and we enjoyed them.

I went to JT's last month and saw they'd starting training, had a course set up at the end of the car park. Did mine with SMART in Swansea - worth the 1.5hrs each way travel every day for four days to do my DAS, they were great (and they use the actual Swansea test centre on Sundays to do Mod 1 training!).

My Triple was my first bike but I didn't just go out and buy it after doing my tests, a few were tried but nothing really compared. Wink
I recommend you do the same to be honest and make your own decision.

Completely understand, and I probably will when we finally complete the DAS.
There doesnt seem to be any bad reviews on the Street Triple. I'm not 100% on the looks, but if the ride makes up for that then I'm all for it.
My final decision on a bike would also come down to being able to be ridden by me at 6ft tall aswell as the wife who is 5 ft 4..and a half..
Thats my most restricting factor.
Thanks for your reply.
