Thoughts on the R Nine T and S1000R

I've been looking at the R Nine T for a while now and can't help but love it. I'm booked in for a test ride this weekend, but want to see if anybody else has been on one.

The classic look is complemented with modern technology and a 110bhp boxer. On paper it looks good but I'm wondering about the ride compared to its competitors. I want to set my expectations at the right level before I ride it. My current expectations are very high, however I have a feeling it may disappoint for this reason. The F 800 R I rode a couple of years back really did bore me.

The S1000R looks like a fantastic bike and I've heard great things. I'd like to hear from some of you regarding this too.

I've never owned a BMW, it's mainly been Jap and Triumph in my garage.

R NineT compared to an F800 is apples and oranges. One is a premium product, the other relatively bargain bucket.

One thing with the R nine T is that it is all about the look. It doesn't have immense performance, and actually from what I understand it's rather heavy. This might disappoint if you ride the S1000R first. However if you can cope with the weight I'd imagine that it's a great bike to ride.

Different bikes that fit different needs, the S1000R is a sports bike with some of the fairings removed* and a detuned engine.

Given the option I'd take the R NineT but my needs are different and I certainly prefer that 'classic' style. As a 2nd bike, no hesitation - I'd have to think about it for a first and only because I commute and well, expensive BMW + commute == much moneys.

Depends how one defines heavy. 220kg isn't particularly heavy and that is all up wet weight. That makes it in the same region as a bandit 600. Peak power isn't high, but it will have pleasingly stout midgrange.

The s1000r i suspect is a far more aggressive proposition.

near me there's been a r9T parked next to a sinnis 125
r9t is the smaller looking bike (or maybe more compact would be more accurate) which was a surprise - it had looked quite big in the BMW showroom in isolation.

That's what I thought. From reading about all the kit on it you would expect it to be a lot bigger than it is.

When I sat on the S1000R it was a lot...lot smaller than I was expecting. I'm not big but I was expecting more of a struggle for comfort. I suppose it is good though as handling it would be easier.

Forget both, get an R1200r. Same as an R90 but with a newer engine, more creature comforts and better cooling.

Rode the S1000r when my dad was contemplating chopping his Striple R in for one. It's mind altering and the brakes are so strong I only needed one finger!

i own an s1000r.
and while it is a detuned s1000rr motor with less revs it dosnt feel underpowered.
it has zero wind protection for the rider so high speed runs are short as much over 120mph it does get hard work,the bike pulls to 150+ its just unpleasant for the rider.
the gearing is lower than the s1000rr so crusing on the motorway at 80ish can feel a bit buzzy.
fuel economy isnt great i get about 35mg.
its as ugly as sin
the finish on some parts is as bad as anything you will find on the cheapest chineese crap.
the electric suspenion and brakes are great.
i love it.
ive not ridden the nine.

Noticed RoyalJordanian acquired a S1000r recently, could try checking to see if he's done any vids of that bike in the field.

So here's an update. I had the S1000R for two hours followed by the R Nine T for two hours.

S1000R: Poooooooooooooowwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I need to improve my neck muscles if I am to own this. It was mind bogglingly quick. An obnoxious bit of kit that could get me into so much trouble. I loved it, like seriously loved it but I don't think owning it would be viable.

RNineT: A completely different bike. More refined and relaxed. I loved the boxer engine and didn't really mind the slight vibration on idle. It made me feel like I was riding a proper motorbike. Lovely through all the gears, easy ride and more than enough power. I got to 100 and it was still pulling, the wind was the only thing that was stopping me going further.

Result: The RNineT wins it for me. More expesive I know, but a damn pretty bike. Regardless of its beardiness and hipster notions, it really is a gorgeous bike to look at and a fantastic bike to ride. Just having a word with the dealer to see what deal he can do (not expecting any as they're so in demand.)

So being the serial bike sitteronerer that I am, I had a sit on this wee beasty last night.

Having had no experience with the boxer engine, the movement felt when I revved it up a bit was a little unusual to say the least.
I could however, get very used to it.
The build quality looked and felt extremely good, it's a thing of beauty imo.
It looked to me like a custom machine but this particular model was bog standard apparently. I want a go.

R9T is a fashion bike. My friend gave me his for an hour the other week and it's a bit underwhelming. It appears to be a good way of selling off the last of the old, outdated air cooled motors for top dollar, along with non adjustable suspension, shaft drive and not particularly nice brakes, it makes for a confusing ride. It looks like it should go like fuck, but air cooled twin motor not so much.

Weight is low down so it's 220kg mass isn't that noticeable.

Incidentally, my friend has since sold it and bought an Rt1200 on a 13 plate, and has done twice the mileage in a week that the R9T did in a month.

I guess what i'm getting at is that the R9T looks great parked up, but in reality it's underspecced and underpowered for the price and market.
