Hi all

So there I am riding 24 miles to work involving motorway and through london. Thinking everything is fine and nothing appeared wrong.

I pull into my work car park and jump off the bike. Coolant has pissed everywhere from under the bike.

Yes unlucky it's happened but lucky it happened here rather than on way!

I'm expecting a coolant hose has given up but haven't looked yet.

Anyone else been unlucky and lucky?

I was once approaching a forecourt and the engine cut out 5m from a pump, allowing me to smoothly roll up to it. Cool

I'd been running on reserve by accident (tap direction was opposite to my other bike) and ran out on the motorway. Shook the tank about and got the last little bit into the carb so I could make it the next 2miles. I rode away oh so very slowly and carefully. Does that count?

On one occasion yes, had the bike from new about a little over a week, left work as normal when approaching a roundabout less than two miles down the road it died and cut out on me, wouldn't bump start, electric.. potato'd.

No breakdown number or credit on my phone at this point, took it for granted that I wouldn't need it, that all teach a newbie, anyhow.. gave up trying to get it started and pushed it a few miles down the road meanwhile contentiously trying to start it on the button etc, nothing.. few more miles down the road it came to life one last time, revved the tits of it so it wouldn't cut out, rushed to put my helmet and gloves back on and rode off.

Spent the remaining 9-10 miles commuting home doing everything to avoid stopping and basically reving the bike all the time (sort of like the riding that young lads in tracksuits on there mopeds do), fair to say that it taught me how to forward plan and slow control (if I didn't I would have had to get of and push again, no way).

Got home, wouldn't start after turning it off.. potato'd.. got it fixed eventually after getting someone with a van.

Lesson learnt always carry a phone with credit and a breakdown number, never.. again Laughing

I wanted to take my Derbi offroading, as I was coming down a hill pulled the clutch in to change down and it broke, I went straight up a wooded path and through some woods.

Not sure about lucky but i killed 2 birds with one stone.

Yes up in the far north of Scotland last week when I stopped for petrol at Tongue (30 40 miles or so from Thurso, the next town over), I found my top box plate, that was held by two bolts, had come loose as one had lost it's nut and was moving about alarmingly. Luckily both bolts and their spacers had stayed in place tanks to weight of the top box and I was able to grab a suitable nut from the mechanics garages a few yards away and fix it all back up again Thumbs Up

I would've been stuffed if I'd lost the box up there on those roads, it had all my clothes in for the week's trip too.

On the subject of top boxes, I put mine on the bike at work and forgot to screw it down and secure it Embarassed . It had my Almax chain and Squire lock (about 15lb) in it and managed to spot it in the mirror when it eventually did come off - I got about 2 miles with it like that.

It was in slow moving traffic so no kittens etc., only a red face was caused.

I had a clutch cable snap on a car right outside a motor factors.

The whole incident cost me 20 mins, and to this day that's the only time I've changed a clutch cable Thumbs Up

Similar thing to OP, last year I got a hole in the rad on the gixer but it happened on my way home. I pulled up on my drive in a cloud of special effects smoke and discovered a funky puddle of green coolant on the floor. I was just getting back from having it MOT'd, too!

On the upside I can now remove, replace and refill a radiator on a sportsbike by myself without dropping too much coolant all over the place Thumbs Up

I'm confused. So, what's going on here?

Your bike's pissing out coolant but you first reaction is to post on a forum instead of checking where it's leaking from?

Oooh, remembered another!

Reg/rec went on my tt and halfway up the big hill towards the village I live in the dash died and I made it to the end of my road before the lights went and the engine died. I had to wheel it the last few hundred metres back to my house but fortunately it was all flat.

I have broken down elsewhere besides "just by my home" I would like to point out. I did spend a thoroughly pleasant few hours sitting by the side of the M25 watching all the bikes go by on a lovely sunny day Evil or Very Mad

What's confusing Confused

My first reaction at 11am was to leave the bike where it is and get to a test on time if you must know, thought I'd leave it a short as it's a bit irrelevant.

I posted this after the exam when I walking back to work.

Is that ok??

I had a look when I got back and couldn't get a good idea of where it was coming from with the fairings in the way so I'll be doing that tomorrow when I take some tools in to get the fairings etc out the way to see where it's coming from.

I got a puncture on the M60 in January. I've been riding since 2006 and never carried a puncture repair kit, but I got one a month earlier for Christmas. Would have been a very shitty day without that.

I've had a clutch cable snap just as I was pulling the lever to change into 1st from stationary. So it was still in neutral and I wasn't moving anywhere at the time. Not necessarily dangerous either way, but I guess it's lucky because it's a little more convenient to be already in neutral and able to wheel it over to the edge of the road.

I was with AA at the time and had a temporary cable put in. I was an idiot and didn't get a new cable, just hoping the temp cable would last. It then snapped in exactly the same circumstances. I'd call that a bit more lucky.

Another time I was lucky... my rear wheel got a rapid-deflating puncture on the first day I ever took my bike out, I'd just taken my CBT that morning I think. Bike control went all spongy and swayed around and I let it drift to a stop. I was stranded in the middle of the Yorkshire countryside. Then a farmer came along with his pickup and trailer of straw, saw I needed help, loaded my bike onto the trailer and, because his dog was in the front seat of his pickup, he let me ride sitting in the trailer, into Masham where we took the bike to a garage to get the puncture sorted.

I'm sure many laws were broken, but a good deed was done. Faith in humanity partly restored?

My first bike was a Suzuki GS500. I was riding in Bury and the bike cut out going round a bend 15 miles from home. It took over 4 hours for the RAC to recover me as all three guys that showed up "didn't have a clue about bikes".

I got home and found out that the starter relay had literally exploaded frying the right hand side under the seat. I locked the bike up ready to start work on it the next morning. I came down and the bike had disappeared.

Turns out some arse hats had taken it and tried to run out on a joy ride but couldn't get the bike started. They tried everything and the bike was a mess by the time they had given up. They even pissed on it (I haven't got a clue how they thought that would start it).

Long story short, insurance paid out and I got a spanking new bike saving me having to deal with obvious electrical problems on the GS. Very Happy

Another lucky story.

My bike was stolen in east London, I reported it immediately and, that night at about 4am, some police, who happened to be in the right place at the right time, saw some lads stuffing a bike into a garage. The police investigated and the lads ran off. It was my bike and I got it back. They'd just taken it for a joyride.

Lucky the police were in the right area. When I got it back and had a look at it, I also learned how easy it is to hotwire simple motorbike.

I've had one seizure and one partial seizure resulting in no compression, both within 1.5miles of home or less.

Also run out of fuel on a scooter once about 1.5mile's from a petrol station, but with only about 100m of flat road and the rest down hill.

Finally was the most lucky ever when a police car pulled into a petrol station at about 1am as I was in the garage paying for mobile top ups. My scooter looked very typical ped poi with a loud exhaust etc, and they did not stop me or come over to chat. This was ultra lucky as I'd drunk around 5pints before riding there.

same, how lucky we are Neutral

Legs are the worst bit to break, an arm is fine, you can get on normally, having a leg out of action screws with everything.
