OK, so I picked up my FZ750 on 28/09/14 and duly got a V5 through a few days later. Over winter I did a few jobs on it and got it insured a couple weeks ago and through MOT last weekend. Just went on-line to get it taxed and got this message..

Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 April 2015 This vehicle's previous tax/SORN expired on: 01 September 2014. This means the vehicle has not been taxed since this date.
You can apply for vehicle tax from today's date, with a tax start date of the first of this month, however, please note that it is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is untaxed and does not have SORN in force. DVLA's enforcement section may be in contact with you regarding this gap in tax.

Eh ? I thougt that SORN is now permanent - I never got any reminders or owt. Why didn't they fine me already ? Is this for real or some kind of bluff ?

Cheers

J

A quick google search gave me the following, "A SORN only lasts 12 months and is not transferable between owners".

You purchased the bike a month to the day before the new law regarding tax came in, from the 1st October 2014 tax does not transfer when buying a use vehicle and has to be done by the new owner (just for future reference).

Not sure how the fining situation works, depends how much knowledge you had regarding what the situation with the bike was when you purchased it, to me it sounds like you thought it was SORN'd when it was actually taxed.

Appeal (if possible) if they attempt to fine you?

Your vehicle must be taxed and insured unless you make a SORN.

You must make a new SORN straight away if you buy a vehicle that already has a SORN from its previous keeper and you want to keep it off the road.

When is a SORN valid
Your SORN is valid until your vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped or permanently exported.

Only permanent, while YOU are the keeper Karma

Yeah 'tis all a bit strange. From Dec 2013 SORN became a one off (no longer annual) but not if you change owners. BUT no-one has really been told that and when you receive your V5 there isn't any advice about it.. Great eh ? So why haven't I been fined already ?

Tell you what I'll tax the blighter and see what happens..

Oh yeah and while we're at it, now they've abolished tax discs how come your tax still starts from the beginning of the month instead of the actual date like MOTs and insurance ..??

SORN is cancelled by change of keeper.

If you didn't know that, tough. You are guilty of keeping a vehicle without VED or SORN, and/or without insurance.

Anything that you say to the DVLA can and will be used against you. If they offer you the opportunity to "appeal" against their blackmail charges, their intention is to get you to admit to it. Clear?

Because RFL involves a government department dedicated to monitoring it and sending out reminders, in order for the aforementioned government to get your tax ponds, unlike MOT and insurance, where it's up to the issuer to do it, if they can be bothered.

It's very easy to link millions of vehicles to tax renewal and expiry dates, when the only variables are the first and last days of every calender month - if every vehicle could have it's RFL expire and/or renew on every day of the year, the cost of setting up and running systems to police that would be enormous and guess who would be paying for that.............

Yes you did. Dig out the V5C they sent you and read the last section on the back page.

Computers are getting quite good at numbers these days. I hear the more advanced supercomputers can even have a decent stab at dates.

Can you imagine what the end-of-month is like at the DVLA, with all of the reminders and blackmail threats going out at once? Presumably they have to staff to handle that surge, then the useless spongers sit around filling in sick notes for the rest of the month.

I can't see any good reason why VED can't run to specific days, other than habit. Yes, there would be a one-off cost in switching over, but as you say, it's not their money they're spending.

Right got it, sneaky eh ? But how long do you get ? There will alwaysbe some delay before receiving V5 reading it cover to cover and actioning a SORN. Granted 6 months is a bit long but what do they allow 6 hrs, 6days 6weeks ?? Also says you will be fined automatically.. yet nothing yet.

Ironically it works out cheaper to get no V5 these days - only 25quid to replace Confused

Cheers all

Incidentally, when you SORN a vehicle, DVLA record the actual date, not the 1st of the month. It's like we're living in Star Trek.
