Flying back to Cyprus a couple of years ago we flew over Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria, i counted 28 forest fires, probably plenty more I couldn't see out of the opposite window.

I watched a cretin start a fire on the opposite side of the valley from my house in Cyprus. He was burning rubbish in the corner of a, tinder dry, field, what could possibly go wrong?
The resulting fire destroyed acres of farmland and vineyards, the fire services didn't stand a chance. The trees and vines smouldered all night, glowing like candles in the dark.

That was a relatively small fire, another fire, later that year, destroyed 100's of Acres of forest, it missed my house by a couple of hundred meters! That fire was still smouldering a week later.

It's a game land owners play regularly, they want to sell the land for developement, but they can't if it's a forest. An "accidental" fire solves all your problems!
