 |
|
Hi all,
I post this not as a question, but more as a discussion point and to spread the word to anybody who may not already be aware.
I passed my A2 tests last spring and been riding a restricted 650 for a year now. My other half is now learning to ride, and since we're both 25, I didn't like the idea of her passing her tests soon, and having a less restricted license than me, so decided now's a good time to upgrade.
With that in mind, I booked myself in to take my mod 1 test again in June. I've done well over 5000 miles in the past year so have gained reasonable experience since passing. The school I booked my test with said they were pretty sure I wouldn't need to retake a theory test, but I've just been browsing this:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/369984/routes-to-your-motorcycle-licence.pdf
and it would appear that I need to pass a theory test. Again, since my last one is now over 2 years old.
I can just about stomach having to retake the practical tests, as I guess it's a preventative measure to stop overzealous youngsters who decide an R1 would make a good choice of first bike.
Unless anybody has evidence to the contrary, I'm going to have to suck it up, and book a theory text this week. Another 30 quid in the hands of the government who for some reason:
(Despite deeming it legal for me to ride a motorcycle anywhere in the world, with a pillion, day in day out for the rest of my life), now think I suddenly need a refresher in the rules of the UK roads. Truly shit. |

Strictly speaking, you're correct, because whomever drew up the legislation was a spacker, or a bike hater, or both.
But have you tried just booking it? Or calling the DVSA? Or dropping by the local test centre? You may actually find that they're reasonable human beings who will apply a bit of common sense - it's not the DVLA. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I just remembered, I asked them via email what the situation was (this was last year). This was their response:
| Quote: | Dear Mr xxxxx,
Thank you for your email dated 20 February.
I can confirm you will not have to retake your theory, you will upgrade to the higher category.
Yours sincerely
