Hi guys, bit of a problem hopefully someone can help with..

Odd one.. Have't ridden much in a while as the weather has only recently picked up. Bike has been on almost constant trickle charge though and the few times I've took it out, it's started first time and been fine.

Came to take it to work this morning to no avail. The ignition and lights turn on, fuel pump etc. But it won't crank.

I press the starter and it 'pings' once then the dash lights 'turn over' as below:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5460/16616775913_8e2f1b57f8_o.gif

We managed to bump start it down my road, it fired up straight away, I looped around the road and back onto my drive, left it running but it was hesitating slightly then after about 30 seconds died.

I borrowed a multimeter and checked the battery after it cut out and it was reading 10.4 volts..

I reconnected the trickle charger and this also confirmed 10.4 - 10.5 volts, but once it started charging it went back up to 12.8 volts..

Could it just be a case of the battery needing replacing?

Yes, very likely.
Whether there's other issues is another matter.

Leave it charging on the trickle charger for a while, then take it off and leave for a couple of hours and read voltage.
Then try starting it and check voltage after that.

yes battery, b'stard dealers don't charge them properly when new so they never work their full potential, mine went 18 months, crap service for a yuasa but not triumph or yuasa's fault, made sure the the new one was properly charged before fitting

Totally agree.

I don't work in PDI, but I do know that triumph give all the dealers very clear instructions on how to prepare the battery (not hard in the first place), yet they still don't follow them.

Probably because they leave everything to the last minute then rush everything.

What exactly is the claim about dealers here?
At what point do they not charge up the battery properly when they should?

Don't let the battery settle for long enough before putting the top on.

Not charging for long enough after letting battery settle.

Both will reduce the life of the battery.

basically the mechanic is given a job card to remove the bike from the crate and either prep it for the showroom or a customer, this can be anything from an hour or three depending on accessories that need fitting

in reality the battery needs filling, leaving for an hour and then put on a trickle charger for required time, that's worked out by battery amperage x charging amperage = charging time, even a YTX9B-S as fitted to a daytona on a 1 amp charge needs something like 10 hrs to charge fully, if you don't do it then it will never charge fully, and not long after the warranty runs out the battery will drop just low enough that it won't work, as the bike needs at least 11.5 volts to run the fuel injection etc

TLDR, poorly prepped battery will fail earlier than properly prepped battery

I know this is the 'accepted wisdom', but do we have a citation to backup that it is/why it's the case?

It's pretty crap that they don't prep them properly. Is there something the new owner can do to improve things further down the line e.g. taking the battery out and trickle charging it overnight?

no, its too late

also triumph put a sticker on your battery with the chassis number on to prevent people making warranty claims on a battery they didn't supply or off another bike, and the dealer didn't fit the correctly stickered up battery on my bike even though it had only just arrived from triumph! cnuts
