A1 or M1

Hi,

I'm going home and have the option of both. It's a 3hour trek on the A1+M to where I am and the going was OK but I'm tired and was wondering if the M1 was any better? The A1 blew me about a bit on Sunday / Cross winds, can I expect less on the other one? Maybe more lorries?

not expecting to have fun, just to get home safely and in good time from north Nottingham to Hitchin.

also carrying loads of stuff, 2 full saddlebags, box and rucksack...

Thanks for any thoughts and advice, leaving in a couple of hours.

I guess it depends on you. I personally dislike the M1, but if you are just going home and don't care about seeing anything than just traffic. Then go for it. It is not a sheltered motorway, if its windy its windy and you will find it the same as travelling down the A1.

I don't know about any roadworks on it at the moment, but if it does, then do stick to the speed limits. Thumbs Up

Both pretty similar these days, wouldn't expect much different from either.

I'd take which ever google says is quicker.

But yes, possible. Of course, these days google reports times with current traffic.

I use waze, which routes you based upon the current traffic too and it is pretty good (only time I've had it mess up recently was when the inside lane was stationary for miles up to a junction, but the outside was fine). On the waze website you can also get it to suggest a route for a specific time of day based on the likely traffic.

Oh and haven't heard talk of any operations, so pretty sure Clanger wouldn't be considered a 'gentleman' Smile

I like the A1, just don't be this guy. Earlier this month I was driving to Yorkshire, came off the M18 and as soon as I got on the A1 it was stationary. Took half an hour before I crawled close enough to a junction to get off and go the back roads, but this guy sat in the queue with everyone else...

Bloody roadworks but nobody working as usual. 50 average speed check, would've avoided had I known Sad

I did find the M1 Quicker though, maybe more lanes and easier to overtake.

I travel to London several times a month and the A1 is a more relaxing drive and doesn't get as congested as the tedious M1

A1 was safer I'd say but it was quicker on the M1, more lanes to overtake safely. Shame about the 50 limit, I did comply to it tho Sad

What is it about people who go faster than a designated average speed check area limit, then slow down when they actually pass the cameras? Rolling Eyes

Last year I came back from Whitby and made the mistake of going down the M1.
I should have known better as I do 3 junctions of it daily.
must have been a 25 mile tailback and when it wasn't at a standstill you had 50mph in place for most of leeds to junction 28.
I hate the road.I'd rather go the A1 A614 or if I do use the M1 join it lower down after the m18
