We're planning a tour - haven't decided too much but the aim is Norway.

If anyone has been before, which ferry did you take? Did you ride up through Denmark - Sweden etc or ferry straight over?

As far as I can see the options are crossing at Calais and riding all the way up through and back or Harwich to Esbjerg or Hook of Holland. Once upon a time there was a ferry straight to Oslo from Newcastle but I can't find anyone that does that route now? In fact the number of ferries going that way seem pretty thin on the ground.

I wouldn't mind having a quick look through Sweden as well. How long does the trip from ferry to Norway take? Any particular must-sees in Norway or Sweden? I think this'll probably be done in July or early August.

Any suggestions on bike preparation apart from a full service and a new pair of tyres? And full European breakdown cover plus Jungle Formula for the midges!

Another route we'd like to do at some point is down into Tuscany. Anyone been that way before and could suggest a nice route? Smile

(apologies if I've asked the same questions as usual...)

That's a long way to do it, how much time have you got?

The ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland is a good option. If you do a night crossing it gives you a full day riding when you get off the boat. I've done that crossing a few times now and the ferry is good, the cabins are comfy and it works out pretty cheap on a bike.

The Oslo ferry has gone. Amsterdam is the only route from Newcastle now

I'm planning a 5 week tour for next year.

I was planning on doing Dover to Calais, then up to Kiel in Germany, and getting a ferry straight to Oslo.

A new Newcastle ferry would be really useful. I think we'd probably take 10 days - 2 weeks to do it, but we waste a day either end getting to a useful UK port from west Wales!

On the other hand, the Fishguard ferry is less than 30 minutes away. I wonder...

Nope, wishful thinking. No one goes to Scandinavia from Ireland. Kiel looks like an option, but our nearest/easiest port I think would be Dover so that's still a fair bit of travelling on the other side.
