Right,

I have a friend who reckons they automatically got a bike license when they passed their car test in 1993, by ticking the "motorcycle entitlement" box when they applied for their license...

is that likely to be correct? I thought even back then you needed to do a test...

I passed my car test in 1992, I wish I'd known about this, it would have saved me a bit of cash doing my bike tests later... Wink

TLDR; Your friend is talking bollocks...

I passed my car test wayyyyyy back in 1978 and I seem to remember that automatically gave me provisional entitlement on a bike up to 250cc?

I can remember my disappointment when I moved house a few years later, got my license updated with the new address and I no longer had that entitlement...not that I had any intention of riding a bike at the time Laughing

Of course since then the entitlement only goes up to 125cc...

They did introduce a 'motorcycle entitlement' tick box on the provisional application at some point (it's too late for me to remember exactly when) a bit after the two part test was invented in 1982, when the provisional bike licence was limited to two years, then you had to pass the tests, or be banned for a year.

AFAIK, a full car licence has never entitled you to a full bike licence, only a full moped licence - even now, no matter when you passed your car test, you have to take a CBT to ride anything bigger than a moped.

A great deal of confusion lately as trikes have moved from the B licence to the A licence. The old part of the B1 entitlement that covered trikes has been done away with so car drivers who passed their tests do now get a full A entitlement, but solely for trikes (code 73 i think)

February 2001, before that you can ride a ped on a cat B without CBT.

79. Of course, it's not at all obvious that this is a restriction rather than some sort of super-extra bonus entitlement, which is just the way the DVLA seem to like it.

End the argument:

It says I can provisionally drive a road roller.
Does that mean I have to display L plates

Back in the early 70's when you bought a provisional licence over the post office counter and computers weren't involved, a fellow apprentice managed to slip through the system.

He passed his test on a motorbike and posted off the paperwork, and his licence came back with everything on it!

Full entitlement for cars, HGV's, the works!

He never bothered to correct the mistake, and as far as I know, never passed any other test.

Myself, and several other apprentices passed our tests in cars at about the same time, but none of us were that lucky.

My father (and no doubt many others) was 'given' a driving licence when he was in the Army during WW2 only needing to pass an eyesight test - as far as I know, he never passed any sort of driving test.

Not really likely to happen these days, but provisional entitlements for classes of vehicles that you haven't passed a test for, usually have to be validated by some means - in the case of motorcycles, by means of a CBT certificate.

A standard provisional in 1978 gave you that entitlement - you didn't need a full car licence. I rode about on a 250 for a few years before I took my (single) test on it.

A full car licence gave you the entitlement to ride a moped up to 50cc without L plates. I assume it still does.

1. Walk to Post Office
2. Pay for license

Those were the days Laughing
