I just arrived from work it is a 45 miles journey I do every weekend.
Today it was wet but when I started my ride (at night) I noticed that the road looked persistently damp. THe steering felt a bit too lose.
Then I noticed a good number of shiny patches here and there, most of them looked dark as I aproached them, and most of them seemed to be actual roadwork patches that for some reason they were being highlighted. Also a lot of fog!

Then when I arrived I noticed that my gf car was frosty in the outside.

So I wonder if those shinny patches were dangerous, you know, like that black ice they talk about.
Please internet explain!!!

I really want to be a all year rider!
Thanks!!

Also I am beginning to understand why heated grips are so popular!!!

Heavy frost this morning on my way to Milton Keynes at 5.45am and barely above freezing.

Don't think it's cold enough for black ice though Smile

It seems to be a Thing now to put down blobs of bitumen with very little aggregate in it. This does get slippery in wet or frost. Ironically, you can get better grip riding on the broken up surface that they haven't "fixed".

If you hit black ice, you'd know about it because the bike would be on top of you.

I doubt it was ice at this time of year.

But if you see something glistening in front of you and you attempt any avoidance, there'll be the likelihood of you hitting more ice and going down harder thanks to your hazard avoidance.

The only way you are likely to stay up on ice is to keep the revs steady, don't use any brakes and keep your bike upright.

Same with oil and diesel patches really.

I once had my steering go very light, followed by my rear wheel sliding out to the side, BCF suggested it was a large awful spill of oil/diesel. I saved it, but it was scary.

It could definitely be ice - or a kind of slippery frosty covering at least. The last four or five nights here it's been frosty as fuck at about 5 - 6.00am. Probably 90% of the road's surface would be absolutely fine. But who knows what microclimate surprises lurk in the shadier parts of rural lanes.

Damp road, clear sky, light wind - perfect recipe for low ground temperatures and ice even when air temperature is well above freezing.
Ground temperatures can easily be at least 5C colder than air especially in ant kind of valley or depression.
Here there's been at least 12 ground frosts this month, when any damp spots could be icy.

Dew on bitumen is slippery.

Diesel spills look a lot like water spills on a dry road until you get a tyre on it and then have the kind of moment that requires an underwear check.

Best to keep your eyes peeled and ride accordingly if in any doubt. Thumbs Up

Left work yesterday morning (out in the stix), bike had a significant covering of hard frost/ice on the tank and seat. The roads appeared fine though.

This mornings ride home had some interesting heavy hailstone showers, enough to make me pull over at one point, as riding on the equivalent of thousands of tiny ball bearings didn't seem the right thing to do.
