London to Scotland

making a quick trip up to Edinburgh and back on the long weekend. Breaking the trip into London Leeds and Leeds Edinburgh. Any advice an non motorway travel or short detours/lunch stops along the way?

The quickest route is not up the east side A1 as you'd imagine but by M6 to Glasgow then M8
However there's plenty to see up the east side if you have a bit of spare time.
In Northumberland a diversion to Holy Island or Bamburgh maybe?
Further south the Humber Bridge and A15 is still a fast-ish road but a more interesting alternative than M1/A1 on a nice spring day.
You could split from A1 south of Newcastle (probably A19) and do the Yorkshire coast and over The Wolds to Humber bridge.

No motorways, why. Its a four hour trip so get up the east and use the A1(M) Not much is motorway and when you his Newcastle you can always nip up the A68 or A7. You are adding over one and a half hours to your trip with non motorways
