Keeping a bike outside....

Being the jammy git i am, my bike is currently monopolizing the garage (despite many threats for the fiesta to be put back, shareing the space) so my ta is ok...

But, sometime in the near future i'll be getting my hands on a 70's (76 i think) model cg125 (3000miles on it! Shocked

), needs a few things doing to it, mainly a bit of a cleaning Very Happy

will probably finish up doing a full restoration eventually...

Thing is it will possibly have to live outside, probably used every month or so (maybe more maybe less, not 100% sure) behind 2 locked doors and under a cover maybe two..

Generally i'll allways cover my bikes in wd40 as weather protection anyway, lots o'grease in the right places... but is there anything else that i'd need to be carefull of if its going to be liveing outside?

If the air intake is quite exposed, Get a small bag and elastic band, and put it over the airbox/carb as the damp can sometimes stop it from starting (I have this problem and its kept in the garage Shocked

erm, are you intending to get a ground anchor? I recomend it!

Buy some ignition sealer spray and COAT you HT leads in loads of the stuff, also coat the joins to the coils (with the leads in place) so it seals the joins, and also (with the caps in place on the plugs on the leads and covers all in place) coat the caps.

Dont go mad with WD40 in the lectrics as it can cause shorts.

Further to what binge has said, if the bike wont start, turn fuel tap off, drain the float bowls, turn the tap back on and let it refill. Its probably water in the float bowls- assuming you've sealed the ignition system.

Whilst your at it, seal the points compartment on the crank case with instant gasket rather than a honda paper gasket as it prevents moisture getting into the points much better!

Me and my brother usually lock the bikes to a lamppost and each other. But I have the option of keeping my bike in a garage about 2 miles from my house. I only do that if I'm not going to be riding for a few days. As it is I'm riding quite often so I keep it 'ready-to-go' outside. Mr. Green

I keep mines garaged 15 miles from my house!! At my mates house, also chained to his 2 other bikes all alarmed tagged the lot... Very Happy

Someone steals or trys to steal it I'll break there neck. Evil or Very Mad

Also, garaged stops it from rotting. My car can rot all it likes!! Laughing

I would agree with Map. If you're not going to be using it regularly, keep it shut away or at least fastened securely.

My "project" bikes live in the garage, my day-to-day ride lives with them in the winter (with just occasional trips out) and on the patio in the summer.
