It's best to book at least 48 hours before departure, but you don't normally save much by doing it weeks or months in advance. Inside 48 hours, and especially 24 hours, I've seen gouging online (e.g. price doubles, or more). I've never tried to buy a ticket at the barrier.
Bear in mind that you can alter your booking. If you want to change the date, you only have to pay the difference in price.
Also, you can still travel on the same booking even if you turn up 2 hours late. There's some built-in flexibility.
When touring for more than a week, I normally don't book the return until I have clearer plans for when exactly I'm going back.
The best way to save money is to travel on a day and at a time that other people aren't. Swings and roundabouts though, you pay for convenience. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Thanks for the responses.
I'll be going and coming back in early and late September respectively, so i'd hope fewer people would be travelling then what with the holidays having finished, but i'd not be opposed to an early start to get tickets cheaper.
I don't fancy paying upwards of £80 for a ticket, so i may just have to find somewhere with wifi or computermeybobs when i'm a day or two from calais and buy a ticket online.

Might be worth booking the return anyway - not sure how common it is, but for a trip we did last year in September I ended up paying more for a pre-booked single (calais-folkstone) than I had for the original return ticket which I was unable to use as we ferried uk-france in the end. (Return part was invalid if the outbound train wasn't used )...
They're also adjustable within a certain period if you know the dates change prior to you leaving, so you could book it now and adjust it nearer the time possibly? Not sure if you can adjust the return date once the outbound leg has already been used. |

Out and back within 2 consecutive days, booked before 11pm the day before is from £24
out and back within 5 days, around £56
out and back longer than 5 days and it's about £80
book after 11pm on the day before you leave and you can double the above prices.
Turn up at the booth with no booking and you'll be looking at £80 each way ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
