Hi, today I tried to format my old PC and put w7 there.
Well after I turn it on, the only thing I get is: NTLDR not found, press alt+ctrl+del to restart. Missing or corrupt NTLDR only means, put a windows CD/DVD into the PC and restart, then fix it or format it.

Now, I can not do that. Confused

HW works just fine. I could put the HDD into another computer and I only found out, the HDD was empty, but fully working. The DVD drive also works.

Why put Windows on an old PC? Linux is a lot less resource hungry and better suited to old hardware. I'd either put Mint on it, or OpenSuse.

I agree Andy, but the PC is for my father and he just does not understand what linux is. He sees it as something strange and pointless.

His old Athlon 2600 or so with 192mb RAM has become insufficient to run an internet browser and winamp, so I got him a bit more modern Intel P4 with 4GB of RAM aaaand very hi-tech SATA 1.0, so I said it was worth the try. I got the computer for free with an old 120GB ATA HDD. Now formating the HDD in my PC, will see about that.

The last problem with my father is, he won't buy a new PC, he does not want me nor my brother to buy him a new PC, and he won't even let me give him my money to buy a new PC. Every single time he waits till I need and buy a new PC for me and give him the old one.

Buy an old case and put new components in it.

Problem sorted.

I'm on it, as we speak, although I'm using the windows app for this. Making a ISO file of the w7. The only PC with working DVD drive that is not the one with the MSI MB, is the Athlon 2600 with 192MB of ram. Thumbs Up

So, I installed w7 on my father's computer. Now, when I boot it up, I only get the initial loading bar, then the PC restarts itself. Mad

Buy yourself a new pc and give him your old one then? if yours is decent just buy a new case and build him a respectable one in your old case so he's none the wiser.

I presume he knows what your pc looks like right.

I knocked together a pc for my granddad a year or so back with win 7 , 8gb ram, 2 500gb hdd, an e7500 c2d and a hd6670 gpu, he loves it, still complains about missing certain xp features but all in all he gets along with it.

I decked it out with card readers, usb3 and about 20 usb2 ports for all his external hdd's and soundcard (he likes editing and cataloguing music).

All he will ever need with it is a quadcore when they come right down in price (lga775 quad have halved in price over the last 12months) q9650 is hovering around £60-80 at the mo as soon as they hitthe £40 mark he is getting an upgrade.

Why tell him it's Linux. Unless he has Windows software he needs, tell him to just click on the software library, find what he what he wants and click to install.

If he asks what it is, just say; Mint, Ubuntu, The OS.

Buy new PC, unbox it and give it to him and say it's your old one.

Yes, I am done helping him, unless he says, build me a brand new computer.

You know how fathers are, he's not very sensitive when he's fiddling with HW, then gets pissed when something does not work. Before you tell him to just take RAM or GPU off, vacuum the dust from the slots and put it back on, he gets even more pissed. Then, I fix it or it fixes it self, he is relieved and then pissed again because an old Athlon with 192MB is not enough to run every single thing he wants it to.

He's like this with everything, computers, cars, stuff around the house etc. I'm sort of glad he did not re-new his motorcycle licence, because I can't see him working on them to keep the good times roll and I doubt he'd be calm enough to even lube the chain if he had no center stand or a paddock stand.

All pros Laughing use diskpart.

Either boot from a PE disk/usb

Or stick the HD in another computer.

diskpart
list disk
select disk 1 (Or whatever other disk it is).
clean
create partition primary size=1000
format fs=ntfs quick
active
extend

That's it

Prep a usb by making it a single primary active partition and just copy all the contents of the w7 dvd over onto it,

Making it active is the important part or it won't be seen as bootable.

It will work for installing from usb then, this is all the official win 7 dvd-usb tool does but sometimes that tool plays up, you can't make slipstreamed or custom usb media with it either (you can make plain media then alter the usb afterwards though)
