You can ride any bike already under 33bhp (like Suzuki Goose/CB250) or anything over that has a restrictor available, most do, even a Thunderace etc.. Insurance companies don't offer any kind of reduction if a bike is restricted, they don't care...they only make sure you're legal on it. If you're 20 with 1yrs no claims you should be able to insure upto a 600 for a reasonable premium, 400s are more popular for restricting though.

Once you're 21 you can take accelerated access, which is another test to give u an unrestricted licence...or you can wait the extra year and your 33bhp restriction will lift at 22.

So its just on what insurance group they are in then, that gsx is 14!!! ARARAR i think but a s640 still like 12.

Coul handle insurance around 1k+ but its just when people say what bike you got its soomuch cooler to say 600 than 400 and and hell of a lot cooler than saying 125 Smile. Cos the next question is always, is it a moped ???

Is there any major reason why people seem to tend to get cbr's or is it just an avaliblitly and price thing?

CBRs...what 600s or Fireblades? In my experience most ppl who buy them are those that drive cars, decide to get a bike and go...ooh that looks nice and fast...i'll take one, stick it on the Visa!

Well yeah but I wouldnt pay an extra £200 insurance just to be able to say 600 instead of 400. SV650 is low group but its relatively new and the newer your bike the more expensive. A 400 for you would be well under £1000, I'd hazard a guess at around £500-600 for a '92-94 ZXR400. Something like a 1996 ZX-6R would probably be over £900. 600 sports tourers are relatively cheap to insure like the ZZR-600 or RF600.

loads of 400's about at the moment as well

generally you can find a nice example 400 for a lot less than an equivalent 600

plus, why insure power than you wont be able to use?

hence why i went for a 250, although having not had a geared bike before, i thought it would be better for me than a 400

it arrives tomorrow, erm, well later today /me looks at clock 3:07AM Confused

How long 'till you are 21? How many years NCB... I'd say go with the 600, even if you are actually going to restrict it.
Just because it should take a while longer before you get bored of it.

Though if the only reason is because it sonds better when you tell people what bike you've got.... them you might as well get a 1200 bandit or something (should be cheaper to insure than a new 600 sports bike)

There's plenty of other bikes you can consider sv650, fazer etc, etc, that all have cheaper insurance and still have a bit more umph than a 400.

I would agree with G...go for a 600, but not a sports 600...something like a Bandit, Fazer, Raptor, SV, or maybe a CB500 (not a Hornet6, they're in the same insurancce group as sports 600s).

They should all be cheaper to buy/maintain/insure than an import sports 400, or any modern sports 600.

The last time I looked, the Hornet was group 14, which was one of the factors going against it...they may have changed it recently, but it was an issue in most of the reviews that I had read...

Yeah, the DR(Z)s are nice, but if I were to sell a bike that does 60-70mph, I'd want to buy a bike that would do more than 82mph Confused (the DRs only do about 82mph, and has 42 horses)

I think a sub-400 trailie/crosser would be cool as a second bike, but not a main bike.

It's kinda difficult to make "appropriate" suggestions unless you give us more info, like how much you have to spend, your height, your main use of the bike etc...

Something like the klr650 is quite good.... nu9, not much more power than a smaller one, a bit more weight. But the power's alot more usuable and it's a fair bit more comfortable for longer journeys.

Oh yeah.. I'm sure the hornet isn't nu14.

OK, the back of "Bike" mag (and Whatbike) says group 14, Ride mag says group 12...and having done a quickquote thing, the Hornet premium is 22% more than a similar Bandit Confused

LOVE my dt to bits Smile and if i didnt have to drive down duel carrage ways all the time,

Can get 80mph plus another 1000 revs in 6th gear mate (^70 cheek)
But that is absolutly flat balls out and involes a slight down hill greadient to get from powerband in 5th to 6th.

Yer was originally looking at a CR250 MX 2stroker as i a bit mud inclined and very often go offroading but with the Motorcross back tyre i got on my bike it make it just S**t scary riding in weather like this Sad especialy with randum power spread over the revs.

1 year no clames
im 20 just
Student but got the moneything sorted
recon i could blow 4k on the bike and 1k on insurance if i was to real want to (invole a bit of not eating for a few months) lol

Aren't motocrossers good for the wet? Confused...I dunno why, but I was always under the impression that moto-x/trailie/supermoto were good rain bikes Neutral

We dont know about other ones but i got a proper offroad tyre and if it even the slightest bit wet then going across man hole covers when completly upright the bike still twitches and if you accelrate even the slightest in the wet in 1st 2nd then the back start to come out Sad

got to go to uni now and its still raining Sad

(ow and about it staying restricted, well i would be for about a month i guess untill i thought i would be sensable and got the hang of this 4stroke bigger bike change)

The engine must be tuned for the Goose, Rope...'cos all of the literature says that top speed of the DR350 is around 82mph Confused

As I said though, I ain't knocking the bike, but I'm simply saying that I wouldn't want it as an only bike...

Also a 2 stroke motorcrooss bike needs to have the petrol and oil pre-mixed before putting it in the tank so getting a 2 stroke crosser for the road is a bad idea. Another option is a Yamaha XT600, i have 1 and it is great fun on and off road + insurance for it and my ZXR400 is £730 tpft with 1 yrs no claims!!

Its got a 40mm carb rather than the 35stock on the DR i think its just the gearing that makes it faster, its only 1bhp more than the DR Wink

x10 more fun

It should be able to accelerate harder at low speed, because there's chance of the front coming up.

The CB probably will be a bit more as not many places use nu groups and some add a 'weighting' to them I believe.
The cb's not gonna have great handling in comparison to say a bandit, and you'll get board of it a lot quicker. However it would be an ideal winter bike and can be hussled if you're dedicated Smile

The GSX-F is know as the 'Tea pot' and should never be considered within sight of a GSXR-R Very Happy

My step dad has one of these, they are very rare you will have a job to get hold of one, also the parts are through the roof becuase they are rare. If you get a KLR600 which is less rarer it would suite you more as a university student.

I've seen quite a few KLR650s and never had a problem getting parts when I had one.

They were officially imported into the UK for over 10 years (over 15 I think!) Never sold that well though.
