Engine Oil Help

Hi everyone,

New to riding. Had my bike for less than a week. Got a Yamaha YBR 125.i got it from a dealer brand new. I am looking to buy some oil so I can top up/re fill when needed. I have bought 10W-40 but don't know if that is the one the dealer has put in, but I am sure it is.

Just a question that if they have used some thing else and I put mine in is that gonna screw up the bike, I know this sounds like the dumbest question in the world and you will all be saying WTF but I have to ask.

If it's the same grade and it is a motorcycle oil, then no harm can be done. But, you shouldn't really need to pour any oil in before the oil change, so I wouldn't worry.

Some newcomers tend to overfill their engines, because they do not know how to read the glass or use the dipstick. If it just came from the dealer, it should be fine, and if not, it is still under warranty. I'm not sure how about in the UK, but here when you buy a brand new motorcycle/car you have to visit the dealer for the check in like 300 miles or so anyway. He will change the oil and put a new filter there, at least he should. Then it'll be all up to you.

10/40 is correct you should think about dumping the oil in 500/600 miles once it is broken in.

Then every 1500 miles if you ride it hard fresh filter every other oil change.

Yea at 600 miles a need to take it back so they can do the first service. A wasn't planning on filling it with any ATM, just wanted to have some so it is there when a need it instead of needing it and now having it haha.

10w40 is fine. For the sake of a litre of oil, I'd dump it at (e.g.) 50 and 200 miles as well. IMO, 600 miles is way too long to leave any initial swarf in there.

Have a look in the owner's manual for recommended engine oil - there will be some specifications that you need to make sure match the oil you buy.

Get a 4 or 5 litre pack and a couple of filters, and make a note in the back of your service book - {Date} {Mileage} "Engine Oil and Filter Changed" and attach the receipt.

Look for JASO MA (or MA1 or MA2) on the bottle. This will tell you whether the oil has been tested for wet clutch compatability and for use in your gearbox (one and the same on most bikes, your included, not the case on most cars). MA2 better than MA1, MA will be have aspects of both MA1 and MA2.

You owners manual will say whether you need to splurge on pricier MA2.

Older bikes can run on API SF/SG rated oils and don't specify an MA standard. Modern car oils (API SL and later) may be incompatible.

Yamalube is rebranded oil from another manufacturer. IIRC it's Motul but pricier.
