Can often be had for £3999 just before the new plates come out as they're shifting 'old' pre-reg stock. I liked the one I had for a while as a courtesy bike, suspension was comical but at the price you can't argue.

Haaaaaaaahahaha, why would I pay £4699 for an SV650? Laughing

If you're not going to do a 2 minute comparison search for the real best prices, don't spam "offers" just because you've subscribed to receive them.

I think I'll never understand people buying brand new SV650.

£4k for SV650? Why would you do that?
I'd rather have 100+ other used/low mileage bikes for the money i.e. Fireblade, GSXR1000K5, R1, ZX10R, Street Triple, Daytona 675, RSVR, (add whatever bike you fancy).............

Or even something for much less money would make me so much more happy...... CBR600RR, R6, ZX6R, GSXR600-750, Mille, ... why oh why would you choose a SV650 for £4k over the above examples?

Easy finance.

2 year's warranty, 3 years without MOT.

Trading in a bike is less hassle than trying to sell it to a succession of no-shows, fantasists and chancers.

Not that hard to make bikes MOT-able. And not a lot go go wrong with them either.

But why would anyone want to be stuck with SV650 for a period of finance commitment - usually 3-5 years?

What price you think you can you get for that SV650 after 3 years? If you buy an used bike instead then after another 3 years its value will remain pretty much the same. Definitely they would be worth much more than 3 year old SV650.

I mostly agree with you, but those are valid reasons for some buyers.

My time is worth a fair bit. Not having to spend it prepping for and going to and from 3 x MOTs, or wait around for a succession of private buyers who never show up or who hum and haw and go away to think about it is worth a couple of hundred easily. Every penny isn't worth pinching- try not to be so Scotch. Razz

The local dealer reckons they can ask £3,700 for a 2012 SV650S.

Trade in, you'll be lucky to see £2,000, but then it's only another £2,000 to ride out on a brand new one again. £670 a year, no MOTs, covered by warranty, it's not such a crazy idea.

I probably wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand either.

When you put it like that...it really is quite tempting. That's <£60 a month for a brand new bike over 3 years.

Someone slap me round the face quickly. Hard.

Or... change every 2 years for constant warranty cover.

£166 a month for first two years.

Trade in for £2500.

£62 a month for next two years.

Rinse and repeat.

Agree with above, for a new rider, maybe not too mechanically savvy, I't doesn't look a bad deal for a reasonable first big bike.

Doesn't sound too bad when you put it that way, new bike every 3 years for £670 a year.

But.... SV650 for 3 years?

The Mrs is due a new bike to replace her SV, so we've been doing the rounds of the dealers.

So far everything we've tried has been:

Too heavy
Riding position too low - Tits get in the way (CBR600)
Riding position too high "I don't want an adventure bike"
Tank too wide (R6)
Not enough fairing
Too much fairing
Too tall
Doesn't like the look of it

So guess where we've ended up back at? A fucking SV again! At this point, I have refused to help her any further.

Some people just can't be helped.

Have seen other funny examples:

£1800 for 15yr old SV

£2000 for 11yr old SV

£1900 for 11yr old SV

Wasn't that long ago new ones with 2yr warranty + 3yr no MOT etc were £3800

Believe me, you can wear an SV out much quicker than three years. That's the problem with them (aside from all the usual "boring bike" gripes - they ain't so bad if you're not into hooning a lot). Finish is poor, electrics prone to water ingress and hence rot, not really a great deal of bike for your money.

I do agree with Rogerborg about it sometimes being worth paying a bit of a premium to avoid hassle - have done so myself many times. But I wouldn't for an SV. I'd be interested to hear what a dealer would offer on a PCP agreement if you were to trade it on the same deal after 3 years. But I think you'd struggle to keep it in great condition if it was a commuter/high mileage/everyday kind of bike. S'pose it could be worth it if a weekend-only kind of ride.

Shit, at the end of the day, it'd probably come down to that same ol' thing - bikes are affairs of the heart, and if someone, rightly or wrongly in the eyes of others, wanted an SV that bad, fk it, why not? But that person wouldn't be me Smile

What is everyones preference over an SV for a first / second big bike?

I love the street triple, but when I sat on it, it looked and felt tiny compared to my naked SV. Felt like a toy bike.

MT07? Ive heard their power delivery is a bit dodgy? Ducati Streetfighter? A bit too powerful?

Any other recommendations?

Yeah, I think you get more bike for your money. Even a nice condition early Fazer 600; good all-rounder that will last if looked after. £1200- £1400? Gives you plenty to sort out any small issues/cosmetics/mods etc, with a nice chunk in hand for kit or whatever.
