I'm currently 16 with a DNA 50 but i'm 17 in a few month's, when i'm planning on taking my bike test and purchasing a larger bike but not a 125 and have it restricted.

A variety of bikes have appealed to me, such as the CBR250, but more impressively the ZXR250. However, i have heard from a friend that these bikes are imports and are quite old, as they don't make them any more, so parts will be expensive and with them being old they're likely to need parts. Is this the case?

So i was wondering, what advice can you give me about which bike to move up to and why? (I'd prefer a 'sporty looking' bike).

Splash the extra cash and get a sports 400cc....an official UK model. Then when your restriction period is up, you'll have a 55-60hp flyer!!

Not too clear on the restriction rules and regs tho....
What is it for your age?

It'd be restricted to 33bhp. What offical 400's are there for example? Besides, how much extra cash would i have to splash?

you'd probably have a bit of a problem getting spares for them.

i think the only official sporty 400's were the cbr400 and zxr400, i'm not so sure about the fzr, and i know the gsxr400 like mine are all grey imports!

Not many CBR250's or ZXR250's around either.
Depends what 400 you go for mate. You do get what you pay for though, as said there old bikes now so finding them in good nick is hard.

Just been reading Marjay's guide to 400cc bikes and the ZXR400 (1990+) seems most appealing as it was an offical import, but any ideas on how much these sell for nowdays in a reasonable condition, plus would the insurance be a killer for a 17year old?

insurance will be higher than if you got something like a bandit400, but it shouldn't be stupidly high!
price depends on age and condition really. anything from around £1k to £3k

If your concerned(sp) about the bhp limit then consider a Honda Bros 400. 400cc V-twin the makes 30-33bhp. Can pick them up good for a grand (but watch out because courier's like them so loads are knackered). good for 110mph and good acceleration.
