https://www.mcia.co.uk/Uploads/Statistics/Press-Statistics-201504.pdf

By and large, most sales are up. Peds are down, litre bikes are down a bit in April (but about the same over the year to date), sport/tour, touring and trail/enduro are down but that could just be due to how manufacturers are describing them.

Good news everywhere else, onwards and upwards. Yamaha are having a great time, with the MT-09 Tracer knocking the R1200GS off the top of the adventure sport category (but not the litre+ slot), and also topping the 651-1000 charts. That category is up 28% this month and 25% over the year, I suspect largely due to Yamaha's offerings.

Given how much of Honda's sales are clearly budget scooters and 125s (nearly a quarter just in the CBF and PCX), I expect Yamaha are thrashing them on total value and margins.

Triumph come in their usual solid third, BMW slip to fourth with Kawasaki somewhat surprisingly nipping at their heels.

Also a surprise for April is that Lexmoto are still showing strong above Harley, KTM, Ducati and then that other Japanese marque that used to sell bikes. Aprilia / Piaggio are a no show.

In local news, the bikes that I might consider buying new are from KTM, Kawasaki or Yamaha, none of which have a dealership in the most populated area in Scotland. Mad

Interesting to see the cbr650 and er6 leading the 126-650 category. I honestly would have thought with the deals on SV's they would have outsold the ER. Or are there too many pre-reg bargains for people to order factory fresh?

Suzuki 'sold' a relatively large number of bikes (by their standards) in March. I now suspect a lot of that was pre-reg bikes that were punted on by dealers in April. It always seems to be feast or famine for them.

Since they had another bad month, I'd expect more bonanza discounts or another glut of cheap pre-reg bikes. Just be sure what model year you're getting.

I think a lot of new riders learn on them because they are popular with the schools, only natural for some to
go on and then buy the same when they've passed. I did my lessons on a Fazer 600 and bought the 'sensible'
choice ER6f for my first year. Should have no issues selling it on, won't lose too much of what I spent and it
will obviously be much cheaper than a brand new one. Mines only done 3300 miles but now I find myself craving
more power, a physically larger bike and better load carrying capability as I carry a pillion often. I'll be looking
at a litre bike, probs a Z1000sx.

Honda did well when the NC700 was released last year. I expect when this new Africa Twin gets released (if ever) it will occupy top spot in the adventure category for some time.

I'll be on the look out for a bike in late 2016. There's nothing on the market weighing less than 200kg with about 80bhp in adventure/enduro style.

Looks like I'll be sticking with the xCountry.

Both the tracer and the scooters are viable day to day transport. I wouldn't call them toys.

Yamaha R1 the most popular supersport. I'm not surprised.

I would have it. It looks good and it sounds even better Mr. Green

Also Suzukis don't seem to sell very well. They need new bikes. Beaten by Ducati, Lexmoto, HD, KTM Shocked

I'm tempted to see how cheaply I can get a fully loaded V-Strom 1000 from them... for science of course.

Ha, I didn't spot that the R1 has actually outsold the R125 for top "supersport". Laughing

Tree fiddy.

Cash price, probably quite low. On PCP finance though, an R1200GS will be cheaper, which tells you all you need to know about Suzuki depreciation.

I wouldn't even consider buying a bike, any bike, on PCP, but how much are you talking?

Fully loaded V-Strom 1000 would be £211/mo for 48 months on their 0%, £1 deposit HP deal.

You wouldn't have to worry about milage or even the condition of the bike at the end of that. Servicing costs are not going to be close to BMW prices. Nearest BMW dealer 25 miles away and I have to pass the Ducati dealer on the way...

Oh crap I appear to have turned into a Suzuki advert...

I said PCP, not HP. Try again.

Beat this.

£2,482.69 down.

36 x £129.00

Option to own (you won't though) £4,966.68

The issue is how much (or little) it costs to ride, not to own. Once BMW victims get locked into the PCP, they're BMW customers for life.

What's the equivalent to ride a V-Strom 1000?

My finance options:

Deposit £3500 from px Fireblade - if I'm lucky not that I would let it go for such money.

New GSXR1000 £10599

Hire Purchase 48 Months
Deposit £3500
48 x £171.59
After 48 months the new bike is mine.

Personal Contract Purchase
Deposit £3500
47 x £99.56
After 48 months the new bike is not mine unless I pay additional £4600. If not I'm left with nothing.

Now.. I've got a low mileage Fireblade, pay nothing monthly, the bike is mine. I see no reason why to buy a new bike at all.

Especially the PCP option seems like a very bad idea - giving up the bike I own for the bike I borrow, paying 100 quid monthly for the pleasure and then being left bikeless after 48 months.

Perhaps you should re-read the sentence I wrote prior to that one. It's also precisely why I used "HP deal". IMO PCP is stupid.

That's also on the proviso it's in the condition they expect it to be in and the milage is at or below the agreed number.

FTFY

Rogerborg wrote:

On PCP you could ride one for £115.38/mo

Suzuki Sales and Marketing types wrote:

Deposit £2,228.30
Agreement Duration 36 Months
Initial Repayment of £115.38
34 Repayments of £115.38
Final Repayment of £5,610.0

But I'd never, ever do it on PCP.

How much for a GS over 48 months on HP?

I'd never buy a bike on PCP. Go over your mileage? Penalised. Want to mod your bike? Penalised. Bike isn't in mint condition when the contract is up? Penalised. Get into an accident? Penalised. Want to terminate early? Oh, you better believe you're gonner be penalised.

I'd rather own a 12 year old chinese 125 outright than a brand new BMW on PCP

I notice you've calculated it at 3,000 miles a year. If you actually intend to ride the bike, then the Nazi Tractor comes in cheaper.

ScaredyCat wrote:

Not interested. IMO, HP is stupider.

If you can't afford to own the bike outright, why pay more than you absolutely have to in order to ride it? If you HP it, you'll have an asset at the end of it, but one that you're bored of and if you go for the Suzuki then you'll be left trying to sell an unpopular bike to a market that clearly prefers BMWs and Yamahas.

In any case, my point about using PCP is that it shows that the Suzuki will be a relatively expensive bike to own.

Interesting stats and comment. My only thing is re:

I agree - however what's the margin on the mt07? Can Yamaha even avoid making a loss on it? I think they're hoping it will be the gateway to the brand and so are willing to have a first step on the ladder that's almost a kind of loss leader.

I'm overstating it - but still. They're bloody competitive price-wise, those 07s.

0% interest finance is acceptable. £1 deposit? Not even a Starbucks coffee can be had for that (which is were most GS's go, right? Wink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGibK_d0mQ0).

Rogerborg wrote:

You gave no milage for your quote at all - I picked one from the list. You want more? At 5k/year it's £129.64 and you haven't even supplied a spec for the BMW. Panniers, heated grips, crash bars, what else do I get other than a base model GS on the BMW PCP deal?

Rogerborg wrote:

You're presuming boredom. I ride an NC700X, have done for 2 years. It's an under powered bike, it's not exciting but I'm not bored with it. I am considering keeping it because it's great for my commute. I could rival its real world fuel consumption on a 125, and that's about it. It's definitely capable of touring but I want something extra for that.

Rogerborg wrote:

I've never ridden a Suzuki bike and while I do see a lot of people saying "Suzuki, what a load of shit", all the people I've met or chatted to that own them, love their bike. The only concern I'd have is that Suzuki cut their prices even more devaluing 2nd user bikes but none if that matters if you want to keep the bike longer rather than sell it. In 48 months Suzuki might even be offering £1 deposit 0% again.. So increase the stable of bikes I have by keeping the two I'd have and add another. They say no bike does everything, how about 3 - One for commuting, one for touring and one for hooning...

Markets are fickle. In 48 months who knows what people will want.

Compared to not owning a BMW? Apples and oranges ...

Suzuki's GSX1000S gets released in the next month or so, I'll be interested to see if that makes any impact on their sold numbers.

Got to admit it tickles my fancy a bit, and is reviewed in a very positive light in the latest issue of Bike magazine. If I had the money for a new bike it'd be high up on my "to test ride" list.

Suzuki are OK if you have a Japanese manufactured bike. My busa was excellent, couldn't fault it in any way, finish, reliability Thumbs Up

Wifies Bandit 650 though, made in Spain, the finish was not so good. An ACF50 bike if ever there was one.

And I have to agree with ScaredyCat on this, £1 down and interest free, I'd go for a V Strom any day.

PCP's are what they are

want a new 899? normal finance deposit and £300 month for 5 years unless you can get a low rate loan £250 a month over 5 years

PCP, deposit and £150 a month for 3 years

if you want a £13000 bike but can't afford £300 a month, but you can afford £150 a month you can have what you want

Compared to owning a BMW as well.

Apparently I do need to spell it out: the big cost of ownership on a new bike is depreciation. PCP figures give a good indication of how much that's likely to be.

The Suzuki has a lower price tag, but in absolute terms you'll be down as much (or more) than you would on the BMW when you sell it in 3 or 4 years, regardless of whether you buy outright, HP, PCP or trade magic beans for it.

The BMW costs no more to ride or to own, despite its higher spec, sticker price and premium image.

Suzuki have made a cheap bike that's expensive to own.
