I'm beginning to think they just used the poll in the Election thread on here Laughing

I think the real answer is that they use phone interviews and internet questionnaires.. I also understand that people are more likely to be honest on the internet as they don't feel as judged, so these are more likely to be accurate. Most polls also have a 1000-1500 sample size, so quite a large margin of error in extrapolating that to a national population.

A fair point, however the Sun and The Times were pro Tory this time (and last) as was the Telegraph and The Express (well UKIP and the Who Killed Diana party).

Its fair to say the print media have not 'invested decades in trying to shame people for expressing conservative views of any sort'.

Some Muppet bet 900k or thereabouts on a hung parliament. Razz

The exit polls were nearly right, but you gov and the like absolute crap. How can they stay in business, if I were a newspaper who had commissioned them I'd sue for my money back.

Has it occurred that they're in the business of selling a story, just like anyone else in meedja?

Why wouldn't they pick the result that gets the most attention and income - "too close to call, check back in 5 minutes!" - and tailor the data to match? Manipulate the questions, the sample set, or just pull the number out of thin æther.

Standard marketeering practice, I'm led to believe.

If you're being paid to answer surveys about the election then you wouldn't say that you've decided who to vote for as if you did then you'd be screened out of the survey and others about the election.

Hopefully there'll be surveys done to try and work out what went wrong with the election surveys. Mr. Green

Newspapers are bollocks, I think the best way to vote for a party is to read all the manifestos, choose the one you like best and ignore everything the media brings up. In the end it's just smear campaigns and biased reporting for, as you said, selling as many copies as possible to a hysterical and uninformed public.

^^^I saw some political student on Question time last night getting all red faced and shouty about Thatcher
and how hard it was to live under her. She was about 22 Laughing
A sign of what an impact the woman made for this country that people who weren't even born have a stick
up their arse about her. I'm glad her smashing the unions killed the car industry in the UK.
They were shit cars anyway, built by indifferent midlanders who would go on strike because the tea lady
was late. 'Autos aus Deutschland weit überlegen' anyway. Cool

Also I read about some fella who put a 30k bet on for a Tory majority.
His winnings should hit the 210k mark.

No way, the killing of any internally housed industry is a massive blow to any country.

Seeing as it's become about Thatcher: An old eccentric German guy in my class said the other day, "Margaret Thatcher was worse for the UK than any German invasion could have ever been."

We laughed about it, but to be honest he's not wrong. He went on to explain how the UK is now an importer of many things that it used to export. Car industry being a big example. A country can't sustain itself as an importer. As soon as the finance boon leaves London, or even if it dwindles, the UK has absolutely nothing substantial to fall back on other than tourists and international student fees...

Isn't that because a strike is usually about improving conditions for workers? Rather than just looking at what the profit reports are at the end of each year. most of the polls seem to sample between 1 - 2000 people, and its mostly done by telephone (landline, not Mobile)
from something I read a while back the pick their samples and ask the same people over a period of time to watch for movement

I'd think a larger base model would be better and spread over a wide area for maximum coverage of thinking
