Any reason not to use a 4s lipo to replace pb on track 675?

As per title.

4s has a higher peak voltage, so shouldn't be damaged by the charging circuit.

I believe the bike's electrics should handle it ok.

(I have various lipos around, but no lead acid batteries that will fit and am a bit broke.)

If run as total loss fine, if not...

It won't be run as a total loss.

Happy to hear of any issues with it running with the charging circuits, but not entirely up on how it'll work on this bike.

It's a remote controlled model forum but probably relevant/helpful:

I think you saw that "12v" Bike 4s LiPo I pulled apart in the other thread.

LiPo's dont like being charged with an unstable voltage and they dont like the heat.

Why not just run without the alternator and have a few battery packs to swap out?

Or you can get 4s BMS's very cheap, so I would probably just bung one of them on and see what happens.

Have a look at using a LiFePo4 battery instead of Li-Po.
They're much better suited to the charging conditions of a stock bike and as light as Li-Po, also there's very little danger of them blowing your bollocks off if it goes wrong.
You can drop one in as a direct replacement to an OEM battery.
Don't charge them using an Optimate or any charger with a desulfation cycle.

But his point is he is broke and has Li-Po's lying around.

I have no idea. Could you stick one on a battery charger and see if it goes bang before putting it in a bike?

Ta. Would the charging circuit even kick in if the voltage is over the minimum?
As above, I've already got Lipos and am a a bit broke Smile.
I have been using a 65-130c 4.25a 4s for jump starting, but haven't left it plugged in after the jump (also, have since managed to short contacts and melt one of the internal connectors.)

A normal lead acid charger may not replicate the same conditions as a bike.

If I was spending cash, would probably look to ultracapacitors as do fancy a capacitor jump-starter solution and to have a play with them generally (would like to have them in motorhome and just have lead acid purely as leisure batteries).

Sorry, I read your post then got sidetracked for 45 minutes reading about LiFePo4 batteries, then remembered that this tab was open so I replied!

Good luck on the topic; I wouldn't fancy building a potential grenade and putting it under the seat Shocked

No. In theory you would be discharging into the reg, except most have SCR's as the output devices which are one way. FET regulators might allow it Shocked

It could work. Problem is 14.4v is the normal reg output, divided by 4 = 3.6, empty lipo. Most lipo chargers have step up regulator in them, but this would mean bike is running 100% from the charger and battery rather than from the reg output. If you modfied/tricked regulator to output slightly higher (15.5-16.4v) ECU would likely be ok, but bulbs will run quite a bit hotter.

You would want a current limited balance charger. Sceptical if any cheap/RC ones are suited to continuous connection/use. NOT wise to directly connect lipo to reg output even with balance Shocked

How do you have current limited charging and not discharging? probably split battery cables, the main ones with a large stack of parallel diodes to prevent charging, other cables to current limited charger.

Diodes would drop some voltage as heat, keep them away from the pack.

You would also want over-discharge protection.

Are there any bikes supplied with Li as standard? Im sure in 2015 they should be. I wouldnt spend £7000 on a new bike with Pb battery Laughing

Or just use a BMS board. Wink

Only needs to run for 20 minutes at a time or so, so shouldn't be a big problem.

Realised I've got a spare battery in the 'race' scooter that'll fit - it's 45CCA rather than 85CCA, but that might be enough (though the trumpet one is a bit underspecced anyway it seems.)

Was thinking I could add a switchable lithium 'jump starter' in if needed - nab a relay/switch from the lorry or something if needed.

4S lipo fully charged @4.2v per cell is is 16.8v.

Minimum voltage for a cell before damage is around 3.3v per cell.

3.3v*4 = 13.2v

More healthy (for a long life) low voltage is 3.7v per cell.

3.7v*4 = 14.8v

On the maths alone I think you are pushing your luck!

Are you thinking for continued use?

I was basing it on being able to charge between sessions too, if needed.

I think the full 4S lipo voltage is too high for the bike and the desired voltage (i.e ~13.8v) is too low for the lipo.

I'd be more tempted to run 3S lipo and try to smooth, and regulate reg/rec output further down to 12v (absolute MAX 12.6v precisely).

Lipos are a bit fickle with charging and voltages, a bike changing circuit is probably not an ideal place to use lipo ... I'd happily use 4S lipo to charge the 12v PB via a charger though! Very Happy
