Evening,

Right so having recently got a new job that is 3 miles away i've decided in the summer months two or three times a week i'd like to cycle, saving money and getting my fitness up a bit.

I want a road bike, that's all i know!

Ideally dont want to spend more than £200 although if a new bike is out of the question for that price i have no issues with secondhand especially if it can get me more bang for my buck!

Bare in mind i dont want or need anything fancy, just an idea of what brands to look for etc

Thanks Thumbs Up

The £200 carreras you see in Halfords are ridable and reasonably solid. Frankly though I'd be looking at second hand, you should be able to get a base spec Specialized Allez or Giant Defy in reasonable condition for that sort of money.

In the future it's something i'd like to take up for a hobby too hence wanting something a bit better than the basic bicycle! How does a cycle to work scheme work? I can take advantage of that

Cycle to work is essentially a tax deduction on the back of a hire agreement. Worth it if you want a new bike.

Although you'll be riding roads for only 3 miles I'd consider a hybrid so that you at least have the option of slinging it around the park once in a while.

If It's only 3 miles, I'd just go for an old steel frames racer for £200 you could get a decent 80's bike, that'd be superior to a £200 halfords job.

Have a pop into Thurrock Cycles opposite the garage on Southend Road. Nice guys in there - can give you some advice.

I got my GT's from them years ago and they've been top notch servicing and looking after them ever since.
