Can someone please clear 2 stroke oil question up for me.

I have a generic trigger sm 50. I got bought the bike as a present and prior had no interest in bikes so I know literally nothing. The oil indicator on the bike is on red so i assume i need oil but have no idea what to buy.

It's a 2 stroke engine but does that mean i can buy any 2 stroke oil for the bike and that will be fine. I dont mean i want to buy cheapest I can i just dont know if there's specifics to bare in mind. The manual, and i quote says:

'oil lever should between maximum and minimum level, add SF lever SAE 85W90 gear oil to the maximum level if required.'

The bike is Austrian (I think) so may explain the poor English and i couldn't work out if 'lever' and 'level' were just errors or were referring to the same thing.

Is engine oil and gear oil the same thing as well or is that something else i need to buy? Finally i've read about having to mix fuel and oil which I couldn't grasp as ive seen on youtube people changing two stroke bike oil and they poured it straight from what looks a normal bottle of oil from the shops.

Sorry for my rediculous lack of knowledge i've tried searching the net but ended up with more questions than answers. I do my CBT in 4 days so would really like to have my bike up and running for afterwards. Any help apreciated,

OK, you probably need two types of oil.

1) Two stroke oil, this is what your bike is probably asking for. It gets added to the petrol to lubricate the piston and bearings and so gets used up as you ride. (trying to keep it simple here). There will be a tank somewhere that needs filling up. Some people swear by different types or makes, just make sure you never ever run out as the engine will seize up. Use whatever the handbook says to use or what the sell at your local petrol station. Probably best not to use stuff for lawnmowers tho..

2) Gear oil, this lubricates the gearbox and clutch and must be kept at the correct level as per the manual.. hopefully there is a nice picture in there to show you how much. This oil shouldn't go down unless you have a leak but it still needs to be entirely changed every few thousand miles. If this oil is missing the gearbox will seize up.

Thanks for your help. So the 2 stroke engine oil and gear oil is different then. Cheers for clearing that up. I've seen how to put the oil in and drain the old oil out so should be okay with that. My owners manual is pathetic hence why i've looked elsewhere and there seems to be very little info on the bike I have. So does the bike mix it with the fuel itself then so i dont have to mix the oil before putting it in the bike? Just looking around now i found some 'Castrol Power1' 2T oil for reasonable price which says its for motorbikes so i guess i'll give that a try.

Just to clarify....

Your bike will have a dedicated tank to add the 2stroke oil to, dont pour it all into the fuel tank. The oil is then pumped to the engine and mixed with the petrol as its needed depending on throttle position and engine speed. This tank is usually under the seat somewhere but it will be probably labeled "oil"

The gearbox oil is added directly to the gearbox, if you have a dipstick, thats where it goes in! If not there will be a filler hole..

Haha, thanks for your concern of me putting the oil in my fuel tank. Luckily I knew that one but I appreciate you spoon feeding me I think I need it aha. Ahh cheers for clearing up the way its mixed for me, that was my biggest worry to be honest i was hoping I did'/t have to mix it myself.

As far as gear oil goes though, the manual says there's another cap the other side which I assume is for that but its hard to work out as its so poorly represented. I'm assuming like you say my bike is notifying me for the 2 stroke so ill fill that up and go from there.

The bikes been left for 3 weeks since i got it waiting for my CBT so i bet its got a dead battery now aswell to add to the drama. I know i should have maintained it but i have 2 jobs and 2 twins new borns so its hard to find time for things like that. Again, many thanks for your help.

Take some pictures of the oil fillers and someone will confirm which takes what.

Do NOT put the 2 stroke in the gearbox or vise versa.
