There's supposed to be a new Africa Twin out, I though it was supposed to appear on the 10th but I can find anything about it other than renders/sops of what people think it might be like..

Anyone know any more?

It is never going to be as "good" as an AT, so they might as well not bother.

I'm hoping that DCT is an option though. Will be disappointed if not. Yay, it is an option.

Quote:
Honda is delighted to announce the return of one of motorcycling’s most celebrated and evocative names – the Africa Twin. Having clearly shown the direction of its development and intent with the reveal of the True Adventure prototype at EICMA in November 2014.

Nick Campolucci Head of Honda Motorcycles, Honda (UK) commented

“We look forward to seeing the Africa Twin here in the UK, the return of this iconic name is already causing quite a stir and we’re looking forward to the excitement it will bring when it arrives in UK showrooms next year.”

Some motorcycles encapsulate perfectly what an adventure motorcycle is all about. The original XRV650 Africa Twin – which debuted in 1988, after the first 3 out of 4 consecutive wins at the Paris-Dakar* – was one such machine. Its go-anywhere ability, rugged durability, easy-handling agility and all-day comfort made it the perfect partner with which to explore. And it helped to define a motorcycling segment that has now grown into one of the most popular worldwide. The new Africa Twin remains true to all the attributes and abilities of the XRV650 and its successor the XRV750, while adding the benefits of everything Honda has learnt on and off-road over the last decade, including Team HRC’s return to the Dakar in 2013**.

Furthermore, in a first for the category, the Africa Twin will feature the option of a new evolution of Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) *** technology, which remains unique to Honda in motorcycling. This latest evolution of DCT has been specifically developed and programmed to provide the off-road ability with which the Africa Twin is synonymous.

The all-new CRF1000L Africa Twin is set to redefine expectations of just what a large-capacity adventure motorcycle can and should be capable of, both on and off-road, and opens an entirely new chapter in Honda’s illustrious history of dual-purpose motorcycles made for true adventure.”

They need to get it under 200kg wet (unless it has a massive tank) to get the adventure crowd truly buying it.

I'm not sure they're going to do it.

The Tiger 800 XRX is 216kg (fuelled), the KTM is 212kg (without fuel).

Of course one's got an extra cylinder and the other is a V which adds weight.

If they can pull it off, and the bike comes with 18/21" wheels, then it will be a master stroke, and I'd consider one.

Sweepstake? Dibs on 226kg wet with ABS and DCT automatic gearbox, just what you want on sand.

My inner cautious optimist hopes for 6 speed manual box and switchable ABS, and a 20ish litre fuel tank option to keep the weight down.

You've been told before in that other place, DCT is optional.

and we all know 12k and 195Kg

ABS will be there + on / off switch.

Honda have been saying that this isn't a faux adventure bike it's the real thing. We'll see but I'd guess that it's a direct attack aimed at the only other real adventure bikes in this class : KTM. It has at least got spoked wheels Wink

Oh, also:

The fact that it's an option demonstrates that Honda know fine well what this bike will be used for. Why would they bother to even test it offroad when a literally insignificant fraction of their customers will ever take it there?

Far more efficient to just spin a bullshit marketing line about how it's legit gripped and sorted, and then hush up any Kevin Ash incidents.

That doesn't mean it's not capable.

Perhaps they want KTM's sales.

Will only a fraction take it off road though? The only similar bike I can think of is the 950/990 and I imagine most riders took those took off road.

No-one buys a bike with a 18" rear and 21" front never to take it off road.

Or at least I'd like to think they don't anyway.

F800GS is 21" / 17" and I doubt many of them have seen more offroading than Sainsbury's car park.

I'm not saying that nobody will, just that the number of people who will buy them for that purpose probably doesn't justify the development cost.

Would you? On your own new bike, bought with your money?

The average Africa Twin will see no more offroad action than the average Land Rover

Sometimes it will be required to drive on a small patch of gravel in a car park.

Pretty much. There's another somewhere of it down twice (once on each side) on some rocks.

I think the KTM 990 is much better example than the F800GS which is an oversized pig considering.

200 miles into brand new KTM ownership, bought for touring I took it to a very, VERY muddy four hour Hare and Hounds event, where I was on the heaviest bike. Dropped it a few times in various conditions.

The KTM990 adventure is actually listed heavier thank the F800GS I believe - however it's not considered to be as good off road.

I still mourn the loss of Highland's American revival.

Just checking.

Because new bike sales aren't driven by second owners.

Same side.

But fair play, you actually took it off road in a more than a grass car park.

Welp, more details have leaked. Seems Honda actually want to deliver a bike with at least some real-world offroad capability. Smaller tank, trick airbox outside the frame, 90 front wheel.

Be still my beating heart.

Just like a Landrover with leather seats, 12 channel audio system, 4 zone a/c and Pirelli race-hypertech road tyres. Razz

I wonder if we'll get a CRF650L? A sort of modern Dominator...
I don't know, I'm always disappointed with new bikes.
