Hi, have stripped the missus Honda melody deluxe 82' (50cc 2 stroke auto choke) its belt was worn down to nothing. cleaned whole scooter, and engine and carb, and exhaust.. . bla bla. (didn't remove oil pump or open gear box) rebuilt, have had running (now goes faster, tho acceleration seemed low) played with the carb before putting new belt on, big mistake, cant get it right now.

It will start ok when warm but doesn't like to start in the first place, I have to fiddle the screws about with little clue which does what, how the hell do I set it up right?

So.. . it runs at 30mph instead of 24mph but I cant get it to reliably start? battery's not great, but I have trickle charger attached while trying to get the carb set so it will, both start from cold and have a sane idle speed (i think setting the idle real high is what gets it started but the acceleration screw did seem to affect the idle speed too so due to the manuals and advise i have found thus far being shaky on specifics as to which is which and what to do with them).

I believe the bottom left one is the air mix and the top one the idle.. . (and the very bottom is the float drain, which flows happily as does the oil to the pump).

Any advise that doesn't cost allot of money before I give in and take it to the garage would be greatly appreciated!

Set it back to standard factory settings, they'll be listed in the workshop manual. Almost all bikes will run acceptably well at this.

On your picture, Top screw is idle speed, Middle is pilot air, bottom is drain.

It won't run right with no airbox attached.

Have you had the carb off? Is it making a proper seal gainst the inlet manifold? Looks kind of scraped on your picture as if someone has had a screwdriver in the gap. I'm not seeing the thick paper gasket I'd expect to see there either although it's not the main focus of the picture.

Yer trying to get away with not paying 20 quid for the Manuel haha, kind find it pdf. (think irs around 1.4 turns for top 1.3 turns on bottom)

Ta for the specifics on screw's

Air box and all other parts, bar final cover over carb are on now, as I said, had it up today 30 (tho cant start in now) just that pic has more parts clear.

yer did replace the upper gasket, didn't remove the brownish part that hold the is it reed's / valve Jobie.. . tho I believe that has another, but only one gasket was in the kit I got.

Let me know if specific pics would help.. .

Agree with this, looks really chewed up around that area Confused

Have you replaced the gasket between the carb' and manifold where it looks all mangled? Even from the pic it doesn't look sealed.

yellow circle or blue circle?

red is new gasket, orange is old.

blue didn't have a gasket and I haven't got a similar shape one in the pack? but it does have a historic scratch on the casing, I didn't pry, has a rubber I do have in the kit.. . I think.

Blue circle! You need a a gasket in there, especially with the state it looks to be in.

From the first pic you uploaded it looks like orange could benefit from replacing too. Looks to have some bodged seal there like chemical metal or something?

I'd make sure all the gaskets are in place on the intake system (even if you make your own cardboard ones for now) before you spend any time trying to set the carb' up right, any leaks at those seals will be causing you problems.

bought manual, new spark and redex on the net last night.. . (need correct factory settings) so, making my own gaskets... . cereal box yer? do I have to peal off the printed layer first? surly u don't use gaskets next to rubbers? also whiles sorting the missus 125 leaky float bowl I discovered 'most new gaskets don't need you to put oil on them' will this still apply to an 82' scooter?

p.s. Ive searched and searched for that ajustie bit on the oil pump, I cant find em but I didn't remover that part, cant see a way of adjusting it even when looking at the part on ebay.. . have tried to use other similar scooter Manuel to do the correct draining ect procedure but well, its a part of why Ive given up and bought the Manuel (plus I found a cheap second hand one hehe).

Thank you all for the advise (god knows I need it! haha) tho I need to check this is all still relevant considering that it ran and it ran faster right?
as I am reluctant to recheck the parts Ive already done for the fear or exasperating the situation?

Additional info... . when I put the old 'starts wet engines' stuff in the exhaust, black stuff comes out, (was cleaned with petrol but I hadn't read about the baking soda thing then, my garage did say it looked / felt ok when I took it over there while hunting for the shock as I was concerned it was heavy and it was in a bad state before painting) this worked (along with trickle charger attached) to start it when first reassembled.. .

I don't get how come it could work, then after attempted tuning completely fail to start same day? was just waiting to check it started when cold before putting the last piece of cover back on, tax, insure and go thrash the crap to clean it through.. . !

I am right in thinking a garage is gonna charge me an arm and a leg for probably easy fix once correctly diagnosed right?
