I've been searching around for my next trip and came across a picture of Isle of Skye. Wondering if anyone has ridden out there or if you could recommend other riding with similar terrain.

It simply looks majestic.

I've been round the isle of skye. It's all single lane roads with passing places and crappy quality tarmac. A wonderful place to explore and pootle about, not somewhere to ride your Firebusa ZX 1000

It doesn't look like that many days, but weather tends to change very rapidly so you can often get fleeting wonderful light.
If you do go to Skye the dead end road to Elgol is not to be missed with a superb panorama of The Cuillins from a little harbour.
The road to Skye from the south is an experience itself. Eilean Donan Castle and Glen Coe are memorable sections.

The west coast is pretty good right up to Cape Wrath - but the midges are evil as soon as the wind drops below 40mph and the temperature is above about 5C.
Some campsites are truly intolerable in the worst periods as they are often in sheltered spots near water.

The main A87 is a very fast road all the way to Uig, as is the road down to Armadale.



The rest of the roads may be single track, but they're great fun on anything other than a sportsbike. The Quiraing is spectacular, as are the Black Cuillens - it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth on a (rare) sunny day Cool

Nah. They're good fun on a sports bike too if you know how to ride it.

Ever actually looked at how wide a road race circuit is? No reason why a motorcycle designed to handle as well as possible, maximise grip and lay down as much power as possible would be a problem on practically empty single track roads.

I can imagine although probably not sanctioned, exploring off road on a dual sport or adventure series would be a memorable couple of days.

So is the weather mainly overcast? Foggy? Raining all the time?

We have insects called Ceratopogonidae or better known as “No-See-Ums” because you can’t see them. Might be the same little bastards you mentioned. You simply can’t stand in one place for more than a few minutes while they're feeding on you.

If I can ever make the trip, I would want to rent a GS or something similar. Rented one in California and had a great time. That bike is a hog though. Nice gallery by the way.

Just assuming but maybe it’s because of gravel or other debris on the road??? Given the conditions are fine, riding the Daytona looks like fun.

I don't think one sort of bike grips on gravel-strewn tarmac any better or worse than any other bike.

A supermoto with appropriate tyres will slide more predictably on that kind of surface but I doubt many people are deliberately sliding their bikes on the roads.

going up to that part of scotland on my gsxr1000 k6 this august

im there for 7 days and plan to ride to the isle of skye and do the apple cross short journey and then the long part which goes all the way round.

might even head to john o groats

if i won 1 million pounds id leave south east london and retire and live up that way

It's not the width of the road, it's the lower speeds and bumpy surfaces - there's a lot of tiny backroads in the Yorkshire Dales which I love on my GS, but hated on my sportier bikes as they needed the high speed wind blast to relieve pressure on my wrists and the suspension was too hard. Horses for courses and all that Thumbs Up

Visability is huge compared to Yorkshire dales. Speed is therefore comparatively much faster.

Incidentally. I can recommend a wee campsite near Kilvaxter. VERY basic but also very cheap. Breezy on the shore to keep midges away. Bike friendly owner. We often have a fire on the beach. Owner has let us lurk about in their garage in the past if it's wet to dry our gear and cook meals.
