XJ Wont Start, No Spark

Turns over but doesnt spark, pulled plug off and tested for blue spark and nothing

Burnt out ignition coils?
Couldn't see any obvious wiring problems...

Started before but wouldnt rev high then died, then I kept trying to start it until battery was too flat, charged battery, tried again, nothing ever since

Compression is there, fuelling seems ok, had the tank off and checked the pipes weren't blocked

I've got a multimeter, what kind of volts or ohms should I be looking for from the HT cap to the spark plug?

Took one cap off and a small cylinder of metal came out... could be fucked caps but surely one plug would spark, neither side was sparking, tried the far left and far right... Hmm shoulda checked which coil they were going into actually, middle two are a bastard to get at

Find a manual - it'll tell you what resistance to expect in the primaries and secondaries. Check the HT leads and caps as well.

The problem could be caused by the plug caps, leads, coils, ignition unit or pickups or by the wiring that connects these.

Alpha,did you get the green wire soldered or otherwise secured? Divvy's vibe spot is at 4k odd. I would be looking at that temporary bodge to see if it has worked loose. The issue is in this area all day long.
LH coil serves cylinders 1+4, RH does the middle pots.
This cylindrical bit that fell off, pic? It mignt be a spark plug screw in adaptor, or it might be a peice of the cap.
Get a manual. I would come up again, but tbf it is a bit of a stroll!

edit; primary resistance =1.92 - 2.88 ohms @ 20 deg C.
Secondary resistance =9.52 - 14.28Kilo ohms " ".
Spark plug cap resistance =9-11 Kilo ohms. ". ".

Pick up coils seem to get fragile with age, that's the first place I would check.

Too much sensibleness from others, here. You will do well to listen.
If you want me to suss it it out for you again, you could chip in towards petrol (new wheels' tacho goes up slower than the fuel gauge going down), i can strip my div so as provide substitute parts. And I will bring a soldering iron. You do not get to own these parts, or the soldering iron. This is AGAIN diagnosis.

I've seen two XJ's with this. A pickup physically breaks, the bits are wanged around by the timing rotor and damage / kill the other pickup.

Fair enough Alph. Sorry if my post seemed arrogant, unintended. I've got a '92 service manual that walks you through leccy diagnostics, I can scan and send to you the relevant pages, if you pm me your email. It knocks Haynes manual into a cocked hat. If thicko me can grasp it, a clever young feller like you will boss it. '92 I know, but I am sure the start/ignition circuits are the same. I could also post the whole thing, if you post it back when done?

BTW, re; pick up. There is only one, but fair play., JJ, we can look there, too!
3 bolts to the cover (LHS crank, 8 mm IIRC) for a visual check. Pull the lead and poke your meter, spec 304-456 ohms white/red-white/green.
