So i am havibg troubles with my xt125.
Its my first bike although im not a 17 year old, im a birn again biker i suppose you'd say. Anyway.
Speedo, not working at all, i know this is a common problem, not going to worry about it yet.
Brake light not working, neither front nor rear brake. Does light up though.
Timing/ valve clearances? Its definitely under powered i took it out fir a run and it struggles to reach 50mph, now i am 6'4" and 16 stone so im not exoecting 70+ but i would expect it to reach 60/65.
The previous owner told me the bike wouldnt tick over, but he hadnt tried to fix it and its clear he hadnt looked after this bike so it falls to me to repair it. Ive done lots of research and i think it could be an issue with the carb/valve clearances. Does anybody have any experience if the XT125 or YBR? Any online resources for noobs? Ive ordered the Haynes manual so hopefully that will allow me to sort it, the brake light is annoying me, what could it be? Fuse? Can i buy new fuses from halfords?

Brake light. Look at bulb first. Is is fine. If so look at rear switch. Follow a wire at the foot brake you will see this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/111544006435?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&rlsatarget=&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

The botl/screwpart on the black plastic is used to adjust when the light comes on. Spring may have fell off or the plunger is rusted away. Good chance your tick over problem is dirty carb and needs a dam good clean out. Fuel/air mixer could also be wrong but you will learn how to adjust and clean parts after your manual arrives. What year is your XT? I had one in the late 80's and remember it being a sluggish heap o shit but i came from a DT125 2T to this old heap but yeah i would expect more than 50mph but then your carb wants a good clean out.

Cheers dude, the front brake doesnt work the brake light either though?
I was going to get a dt or kmx but they were at best 300 more and more costly to run, and i dont intend to be on a 125 for long.
Gonna see if changing tge spark plug helps the tachometer too. So much to do with so little knowledge lol.

Yeah it sounds like it wants a dam good service. Front brake light tends to be a switch under the lever. Do you still hear the click when you pull the brake as some dont bother replacing the switch when they fuck up as most MOT guys are happy if one or the other works. Could be a simple case of wire vibrated off. Your speedо no doubt will just be the speedо drive cable. Could be the drive itself at the wheel a its a simple pair of lugs that are easily bent when putting the wheel on.

Screw out the drive cable from behind the clocks and at the wheel and turn the inner cable. If not turning the other end its snapped. Get a new one for a few quid on ebay. Yeah no doubt it wants a service and spark plug will help but hold out. Get the plug, new oil and filter and change the lot at the same time but most importantly clean out the carb properly and look into the valve clearance. Not sure if shims or lock nut and screw on your bike. Older models should be locknut type and easy to adjust.

Is this a cheap bike with no MOT you intend on getting road legal again. Sounds like it runs so getting it through an mot will be surprisingly cheap unless you need the likes of tyres or major engine work. Shit like forks, head or wheel bearings are all easy to change just dont be afraid to ask when stuck. We all started from knowing nothing.

id do the valve clearances as well, no one ever does it,
and its so easy to do, and can be quite common cause of faults.
